No. 7 UCLA Outlasts Utah, 4-2

April 14, 2017 | Men's Tennis

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The No. 7 UCLA men's tennis team withstood a test from visiting Utah Friday, as it defeated the Utes at Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts, 4-2. Clutch performances by Maxime Cressy on Court 6 and Gage Brymer on Court 1 fueled the Bruins down the stretch.

With No. 10 Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu locked in a duel on Court 1, Courts 2 and 3 stepped up for the Bruins in doubles. In his return to action, Joseph Di Giulio joined Austin Rapp on Court 2, where the pair defeated Dan Little and Slava Shainyan, 6-1. Di Giulio-Austin Rapp is now 11-5 on the year and 4-3 in dual-match play. With the doubles point on the line, the team of Cressy and Ben Goldberg topped Santiago Sierra and Joe Woolley on Court 3, 6-2, to give the Bruins the day's first point.

In singles, Zhu made quick work of Sierra on Court 3, as the freshman posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory on Court 3. The freshman is now 11-8 on the year and 8-7 in dual-match play. Little cut the Utes deficit in half, though, as he gave Redlicki his first Court 2 loss of the year, 7-5, 6-1. Then, despite Austin Rapp's first-set win on Court 5, Utah's Parker McGuiness rallied to even the match, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3.On the next court over, Cressy and Joe Woolley went point-for-point down the stretch.

Trailing for much of the second set, Cressy would not let the Utes take the advantage, flipping a switch that powered the sophomore to a 6-3, 7-5 win. That left it up to No. 20 Brymer on Court 1, where he had already taken the first set with a 7-2 tiebreak. With all eyes on the top court, Brymer topped David Micevski for the clinching point, 7-6 (2), 6-3. The win marked the 20th on the year for Brymer.

The Bruins will be back in action Sunday, when they welcome Arizona to Sunset Courts. Play will begin at 12:00 p.m., as UCLA looks to keep its Pac-12 record unblemished.
