EDMOND, Okla. - In the final regular season tournament of his inaugural campaign, freshman Hidetoshi Yoshihara recorded the first victory of his collegiate career, winning The Maxwell by one stroke at the Oak Tree Golf Club on Saturday.
Yoshihara balanced his books in his final round with a pair of birdies on #5 and #15 and two bogeys for an even-par 70. He was the lone player in the field to finish in red figures, shooting a 1-under 209 for the weekend.
As a team, the Bruins improved every day, finishing the tournament in a tie for fifth (+31, 871). UCLA was 4-over (284) in its final round.
Sophomore Patrick Murphy tied for 23rd (+8, 218) after shooting a 2-over 72 on Saturday. He made four birdies on the third, fourth, 12th and 16th, adding two bogeys and two doubles. Junior Tyler Collier tied for 42nd (+13, 223), posting a 1-over 71 in his final round. He made three birdies on the third, sixth and ninth, two bogeys and one double. Sophomore Cole Madey also shot a 1-over 71 on Saturday to tie for 48th (+14, 224). He recorded six birdies (#8, #10, #12, #15, #17 and #1), one bogey and two triples. Junior Corey Shaun tied for 62nd (+17, 227), shooting a 4-over 74. He birdied #5 and #10 to go with four bogeys and a double.
The fivesome of Bruins who participated at The Maxwell are done for the regular season ahead of the Pac-12 Championships at the end of the month, but three more UCLA golfers will head to Cypress Ridge Golf Course next week, as sophomore Phil Delisi and freshmen Harrison Mahon and Scott Mitchell will play in the Cal Poly Shootout in Arroyo Grande, Calif.
