No. 5 Men's Tennis Dominates in NCAA Opener

LOS ANGELES - The fifth-seeded UCLA men's tennis team opened up the 2017 NCAA Tournament in impressive fashion on Friday afternoon, dispatching of Army West Point, 4-0 in a first-round match at the Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts. With the win, the Bruins improve to 20-5 on the year, marking the program's fifth 20-win season in the last six years. More importantly, UCLA moves on to Saturday's second round where it will take on Ole Miss (17-9) at 1:00 p.m. The Rebels downed UC Santa Barbara, 4-1 in their opening match on Friday.
UCLA set the tone in doubles, taking victories at court Nos. 2 and 3 to secure the point. After Austin Rapp and Logan Staggs notched a dominating 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot, Maxime Cressy and Ben Goldberg clinched the point at court No. 3, where they downed Myles Conlin and Nikita Pereverzin, 6-4.
It was much of the same in singles play, as UCLA started out by taking the first set at all six courts, eventually winning all three of its singles matches in straight sets. Wins by Staggs (court No. 3) and Goldberg (court No. 6) put the Bruins ahead 3-0. That set the stage for junior Martin Redlicki to clinch it at court No. 1. Redlicki, who was playing his first match at the No. 1 position in more than two months, downed Michael Nguyen, 6-3, 6-4 to give the Bruins an insurmountable 4-0 lead and send UCLA into Saturday's second round.
The Black Knights, champions out of the Patriot League, end their season at 21-10.
Tickets for Saturday are $8 for adults and $5 for youth/students. The first 100 students with a valid university ID will get in for free. Tickets can be purchased upon entrance to the Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts.
