IRVINE, Calif. -- Top-ranked UCLA dropped its first game of the 2017 season with a 9-8 setback at No. 7 UC Irvine at the Anteaters Aquatics Complex on Saturday afternoon. The Bruins slip to 12-1 on the year while the Anteaters improve to 9-4. With the win, the Anteaters snapped a 13-game losing streak to UCLA, which is now 76-60-1 all-time against UC Irvine.

Freshman Chasen Travisano led the Bruins with two goals against the Anteaters. Redshirt sophomore Alex Wolf played the entire game in goal, registering 13 saves and three steals while allowing nine goals (five on power plays).

Fynn Schuetze got the Anteaters on the board first with a power play goal (3:16). Freshman Luke Henriksson tied the game at 1-1 (2:53) off a nice feed from senior Warren Snyder. But UC Irvine would hold a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter after another power play goal by Schuetze (0:33).

Travisano led off the second quarter with a goal from the front court (7:32) to tie the game at 2-2. But Schuetze completed his hat trick with a strike after the ordinary (7:17) to put UCI in front, 3-2. Sophomore James Vlachonassios tied the game at 3-3 (5:55) with another score from the front court for the Bruins. Senior Jesse Camou gave UCLA its first lead of the game on a power play (4:13) to make it 4-3. Lovre Milos tied the game at 4-4 with a power play goal with 20 seconds remaining but Travisano scored his second of the game (0:03) to give UCLA a 5-4 lead at the half.

Robby Stieffel tied the game at 5-5 with yet another power play goal (6:28) to open the scoring in the third and then Antoine Lena scored on a counter (3:39) to regain the lead for the Anteaters, 6-5. That score held until the start of the fourth.

Senior Matt Farmer scored from two meters (7:13) to tie the game at 6-6. But Schuetze scored his fourth of the game (6:58) from the front court to put UCI up 7-6. Senior Max Irving scored from the front court (4:10) to tie the game at 7-7. But again UCI got a power play goal (3:33) to regain the lead at 8-7, this time from Lena, his second of the game. Senior Alex Roelse tied the game at 8-8 with a strike after an ordinary foul (3:10). But the Anteaters' Lena completed his hat trick with a score on a counter (0:39) to provide the 9-8 final. The Bruins failed to draw any exclusions in the fourth quarter and had their last two shots of the game hit the post.

The Bruins return to action on Saturday, Oct. 7 in a non-conference game at No. 9 Pepperdine at 12:00 p.m. at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool.
