The Bruins were led by freshman Jake Cavano, who scored a game-high three goals. Freshman Danny Roland played the entire game in the cage for UCLA registering seven saves while allowing seven goals.
Cavano assisted on the Bruins' first goal (7:12) that was scored by sophomore Felix Brozyna-Vilim at two meters. Santa Clara tied it at 1-1 with a goal at set (2:15) by Reilley May. The Bruins took a 2-1 lead into the second period after a power play goal by Peter Lovas (0:25).
Senior Warren Snyder put UCLA up 3-1 with a power play goal at the 6:46 mark of the second period. But Santa Clara got back-to-back goals (4:57 and 3:00) to tie the game at 3-3. But Cavano would put the team on his back and score two unanswered goals (2:36 and 2:03) to give the Bruins a 5-3 lead at the break.
The Broncos would come out firing in the third quarter with two quick scores (7:31 and 6:52) to tie the game at 5-5. UCLA woke up and reeled off six straight goals by the end of the period to build an 11-5 lead heading into the four period. Sophomore Quinten Osborne scored his first at two meters (5:53) and sophomore Nicolas Saveljic added a power play goal (4:11) to make it 7-5. After another goal by Osborne at set (3:18), freshman Michael Graner (2:02) put the Bruins up 9-5 with a score on a counter. Then Cavano completed his hat trick with a goal on a counter attack (1:22) and Saveljic scored his second of the game on a 6-on-5 opportunity (0:23) to put the game out of reach.
Santa Clara scored the first two goals of the fourth period (7:44 and 4:53) to cut it to 11-7. But they would not get closer as Snyder added his second of the game (3:59) on a power play and Graner netted his second on a counter (2:22) to provide the 13-7 final.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow when they face No. 8 Pepperdine (10-6) on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 10:40 a.m. PT. The Bruins defeated the Waves, 16-10, in Los Angeles back on Sept. 15 at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center.
