ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands – The UCLA women's hoops team nearly erased a 15-point, second-half deficit before falling to 17th-ranked South Florida, 60-56, on Saturday in the Bruins' final game of the Paradise Jam.
The Bruins (3-4) got as close as three down the stretch but couldn't get over the hump. Senior Japreece Dean scored a team-high 17 points, while senior Kennedy Burke had an all-around performance with 16 points, five rebounds and five steals.
Burke, who averaged 18.3 points, 6.3 rebounds and 2.7 steals in the three-game stretch, was named a Paradise Jam Tournament All-Star.
The Storyline
UCLA's defense in the first quarter was as stout as it gets, as the Bruins held South Florida scoreless until the 3:35 mark and forced the Bulls to start 0-for-9 fro the field. The Bruins were able to go up 6-0 after a layup by Dean, and the Bulls responded with a 6-0 run of their own before redshirt freshman Lindsey Corsaro drained a triple at the buzzer to put UCLA up 9-6 after one.
The Bruins struggled in the second quarter, going 1-for-10 and allowing South Florida (5-2) to take a 20-11 advantage. Senior Lajahna Drummer responded with a three-point play for UCLA, but the Bulls fired back with consecutive treys to go up by 11 (27-16), and the Bruins ultimately entered the locker room down 13 (31-18).
Playing with a greater sense of urgency in the second half, UCLA issued a suffocating full-court press to cut the deficit to six (35-29) after a pull-up three by Dean.
UCLA inched closer in the fourth, trimming the gap to five (49-44) after a post-up and score by Burke. Two possessions later, sophomore Michaela Onyenwere scored in the paint to make it a one possession (51-48) game, but South Florida scored the next six points and held the Bruins scoreless for a critical three-minute stretch.
In crunch time, the Bruins got as close as three but couldn't get over the hump, as the Bulls escaped with a four-point win.
