Bruins Suffer Tough-Luck 1-0 Loss to Stanford

November 04, 2018 | Men's Soccer

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's soccer team enjoyed an advantage in the run of play but not on the scoreboard against No. 6 Stanford on Sunday evening at Wallis Annenberg Stadium, dominating possession en route to a 21-10 edge in shots but falling by a score of 1-0.

UCLA (10-7-0, 5-4-0 Pac-12) seemed snakebitten from practically the start of the game. In just the sixth minute, the Bruins had a ball get past Stanford keeper Andrew Thomas, but it was cleared off the line at the last possible moment. The Bruins went on to strike the woodwork three times over the course of the game.

The Cardinal (11-2-4, 7-1-1 Pac-12) scored the game's lone goal in the 52nd minute, as Zach Ryan collected a pass from Marc Joshua in the 18, turned and managed to get a shot just inside the left post.

"We were the better team tonight and we were unfortunate not to win the game and unfortunate not to score a couple goals," said UCLA head coach Jorge Salcedo. "It's really disappointing when the guys put so much into the game and really outplay a very good team. It's heartbreaking in many ways, but I told the guys that as disappointed as I am, I'm even more proud of their performance and the way they approached the game. After the first 20 minutes, we're on top of the game and in control, and for one reason or another we couldn't find our goal."

The Bruins had their first chance to find the back of the net in the 19th minute, as Anderson Asiedu received a pass from Mohammed Kamara about 30 yards from goal, took a touch in stride and then blasted a shot past Thomas. However, the shot ended up clanging off the post and staying out. The Bruins remained the more dangerous side throughout the first 45 minutes of the game, going into the halftime break with an 8-4 advantage in shots.

Brandon Terwege narrowly missed his third set piece of the goal shortly after the start of the second half, getting his head on a corner kick near the penalty spot and sending it to the far post where it one-hopped the post and bounced right to a frozen Thomas.

Just two minutes after Stanford's tally, Santiago Herrera looked like he would have his second big goal of the week for UCLA – he netted the game-winner against Cal in the 87th minute on Thursday – but his laser from 20 yards out instead struck the crossbar and kept the score at 1-0 in favor of the visitors.

The Bruins continued to blitz the Cardinal over the game's final half hour, sending eight shots towards Thomas over that span. However, he was up to the task with saves on all three of UCLA's goal-bound efforts. He finished the night with six saves overall.

Freshman midfielder Matt Hundley led the Bruins with six shots and three shots on goal.

Senior Cole Martinez made three saves in his first appearance Sept. 22 at UC Santa Barbara. He has now allowed one goal or fewer in four of his five outings.

The Bruins conclude their regular season schedule on Thursday night when they host San Diego State starting at 8:00 p.m. UCLA's five seniors will be honored before the contest. The game will be carried live by the Pac-12 Networks.
