PALM DESERT, Calif. - The 21st-ranked Bruins tee it up for the second time this week, heading to The Classic Club for the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. The 54-hole tournament runs from Friday through Sunday at the par-72, 7,322-yard layout.
The scoring fivesome for the Bruins will consist of senior Tyler Collier, junior Cole Madey, sophomore Hidetoshi Yoshihara and freshmen Devon Bling and Eddy Lai. Juniors Jack Ireland and Patrick Murphy will be playing as individuals. Each day will feature double-tee starts on holes #1 and #10, beginning at 7 a.m. Live scoring will be available here.
Joining UCLA and host Wyoming in the 22-team field are #14 Texas Tech, #15 California, #28 Tennessee, #36 Kansas, #40 TCU, Boise State, Cal State Fullerton, Colorado, Denver, Idaho, Little Rock, Loyola Marymount, Nebraska, Old Dominion, South Dakota State, Southern Illinois, Stephen F. Austin, UC Riverside, UT Arlington and Wichita State.
The Bruins have placed in the Top 4 in all five tournaments this season, tying for second at The Farms Invitational, which took place in Rancho Santa Fe on Monday and Tuesday. UCLA finished at 8-over 872, one shot back, shooting a 2-under 286 as a team in the final round. In the fall, the Bruins were second at the Marquette Intercollegiate (Oct. 1-3), tied for third at the Inverness Intercollegiate (Sept. 18-19), fourth at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invitational (Oct. 29-31) and tied for fourth at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate (Oct. 20-22). UCLA has been under par in 10 of its 14 rounds, including six straight to end the fall. The Bruins were a combined 37-under (827) at Makai, including a 20-under 268 in round two. At the Georgia Collegiate, UCLA shot a three-round 846 (-18), while at the season-opening and rain-shortened Inverness Inter, the Bruins fired a 3-under 565.
Yoshihara was the top finisher for the Bruins at The Farms, tying for second at 3-under 213. He was under par in each of his last two rounds with a 1-under 71 and a 2-under 70. It was his third Top 10 finish of the season, as he tied for third at Marquette (-2, 214) and tied for sixth at Inverness (-6, 138). Yoshihara has eight under-par rounds this season, including a 5-under 67 in round two at Marquette and a 4-under 67 in round one at Inverness. The sophomore had two sub-70 rounds to start the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate (-4, 212), as he tied for 23rd.
Madey has a pair of Top 10s and four Top 20 showings in five events, finishing seventh at the Warrior Princeville Makai Invite with a three-round total of 202 (-14). He was under par in all three rounds, including a 9-under 63 in round two to tie a school record for lowest individual round to par. Madey tied for 12th at The Farms (+3, 219), shooting a 1-under 71 in his second round. He also tied for 12th at the Georgia Collegiate (-5, 211), posting a closing 5-under 67. The junior added another one of his six under-par rounds at Inverness, as he tied for ninth (-3, 139).
Bling posted his best finish of the fall at the Makai Invite, tying for 16th. He had a pair of sub-70 rounds, including an opening 7-under 65. Bling closed with a 4-under 68 to record a 54-hole total of 8-under 208. His other two under-par rounds were 3-under 69s in round two at Marquette and round three at the Georgia Collegiate. Earlier this week, the freshman tied for 17th in Rancho Santa Fe, opening the tournament with a 1-under 71.
Collier tied for 16th at Marquette (+5, 221) and tied for 20th (+5, 221) at The Farms. He finished his fall with back-to-back, sub-70 rounds, shooting a 4-under 68 in round two at the Warrior Princeville and a 3-under 69 in round three. The senior tied for 23rd with a 54-hole total of 6-under 210. He has five under-par rounds and is a combined 6-under in his final rounds, including a 2-under 70 on Tuesday in the final round in Rancho Santa Fe.
Lai has finished inside the Top 20 in three of five events and has seven under-par rounds, including four in the 60s. He tied for 12th at the Georgia Collegiate (-5, 211), shooting under par in each of his first two rounds. He preceded that with a T-16 showing at Marquette and a T-20 finish at the season-opening Inverness Intercollegiate (E, 142). Lai shot a 5-under 67 in round two at the Makai Invite. The freshman tied for 22nd (+6, 222) earlier this week.
Ireland played in his third tournament of the season at The Farms Invitational, tying for 25th (+7, 223) as an individual. He shot an opening-round, 1-under 71. Ireland tied for 34th (+4, 220) at the Bill Cullum Invitational, shooting a 4-under 68 in round one.
Murphy will be playing in his fifth tournament. He tied for 17th as an individual at the Bill Cullum Invitational (Oct. 16-17). Murphy recorded an even-par 216, shooting a season-best, 3-under 69 in round one. The junior has also tied for 34th at Marquette and tied for 49th at Inverness and The Farms.
