Bruins Win Two at East Meets West Challenge

No. 4 UCLA defeated No. 9 LSU, 4-1 and No. 13 FIU, 3-2, on Saturday at Manhattan Beach.

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif.ย -- No. 4 UCLA (8-3) opened play in the second annual East Meets West Challenge with a 4-1 victory over No. 9 LSU (5-4) in the first game of the day on Saturday at Manhattan Beach Pier. The eight-team tournament features eight ranked teams, including all the teams in the top five.
Senior Elise Zappiaย and sophomore Madi Yeomansย got the Bruins onn the board first with a straight-set win on court four over Olivia Powers and Gina Tillis, 21-16, 21-14.
The Bruins' junior pair of Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara put UCLA up 2-0 with a straight-set win over Claire Coppola and Kristen Nuss, 21-10, 21-17.
UCLA junior Sarah Sponcil and sophomore Lily Justine secured the dual victory on court two when they beat the Tigers' Haleigh Nelson and Hunter Domanskiย in straight sets, 21-10, 21-12.
LSU's Emmy Allen and Maddieย Ligonย got the Tigers' only point on court three with a straight-set win over junior Zana Muno and sophomoreย Savvy Simo, 21-15, 21-15.
Freshman Megan Muret and junior Izzy Carey provided the 4-1 final, winning a three-set thriller, 21-15, 19-21, 15-12, over Riley Young and Megan Davenport on court five.

UCLA (9-3) concluded day one of the East Meets West Challenge with a 3-2 win over No. 13 FIU (6-3) in pouring rain.
UCLA took a 1-0 lead on court five after Bruin freshmanย Megan Muret and junior Izzy Carey defeated FIU'sย Mariana Dal Pozzo and Taijaย Thomasย in straight sets, 21-17, 21-14.
But FIU tied it at 1-1 with a three-set win on court one as Federicaย Frasca and Margherita Bianchinย defeated UCLA's Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara, 11-21, 21-16, 15-12.
The Bruins took a 2-1 lead in the dual after juniorย Sarah Sponcil and sophomore Lily Justine rallied on court three to beat Lina Bernierย and Dorinaย Klinger, 16-21, 21-12, 15-10.
UCLA clinched the dual victory on court three as junior Zana Muno and sophomore Savvy Simoย took down FIU'sย Anabelaย Sataric and Madison Besterfield in threeย sets, 17-21, 21-16, 15-11.
Estefanieย Bethancourt and Natalia Gironย defeated a new Bruin pairing of seniorย Elise Zappia and freshman Mac Mayย in three sets, 15-21, 21-19, 15-13.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow against two more ranked teams to conclude play in the East Meets West Challenge. UCLA will open with No. 5 Florida State at 11:00 a.m. PT and end with No. 20 TCU at 3:00 p.m.
