UCLA Tops Pacific, 12-8, to Complete Road Trip

March 11, 2018 | Women's Water Polo

STOCKTON, Calif. – The No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team wrapped up a nearly-two-month-long road trip Sunday with a 12-8 win over No. 8 Pacific at the Chris Kjeldsen Aquatics Complex. Five Bruins registered multi-goal games, with Lizette Rozeboom leading the way with her third hat trick of the season.

Devin Grab, Bronte Halligan, Lexi Liebowitz and Maddie Musselman scored two goals each to back up Rozeboom and Carlee Kapana, who tallied 15 saves in goal. Mariana Duarte and Viktoria Szmodics each posted hat tricks for Pacific.

Nearly five minutes went by without a first-quarter goal before Halligan got the Bruins' on the board off the feed from Nicole Reynolds (3:19). Less than two minutes later, that combination teamed up again to extend UCLA's lead to 2-0 (1:29). With less than a minute to play, Devin Grab scored for the Bruins' third even-strength goal of the quarter to push the advantage to 3-0.

The second quarter belonged to Rozeboom who scored all three of her goals in the first-half of the frame (7:47, 6:34, 4:14) and increased her season total to 31. Liebowitz scored a first a little later (2:57), while Tigers Duarte and Szmodics mixed in a pair for Pacific. The Bruins led at the half, 7-2.

Twenty-six seconds into the third, Grab increased the Bruin lead to a game-high six with her second of the game. Szomidics quickly reduced the lead to four, though, as the junior completed her hat trick. Musselman answered, though, as she and Myna Simmons sandwiched goals around Duarte's second. Liebowitz's second (2:25) and Duarte's third (1:15) sent the game to the final quarter with the Bruins leading by an 11-6 score.

Musselman doubled up the Tigers at 5:30 with her second of the day. Kyra Christmas converted on a penalty shot (4:59) and Savannah Fitzgerald tacked on one more for the Tigers (0:52).

For the first time this season, the Bruins will host a game at Spieker Aquatics Center when they welcome San Jose State for their MPSF home opener on Sunday, March 18 (12:30 p.m.). UCLA opened its home campaign Jan. 13 with an 11-2 win over Loyola Marymount at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center's Park Pool.
