March 18, 2018 | Women's Water Polo
LOS ANGELES โ In its first home game since Jan. 13โand 2018 debut at Spieker Aquatics Centerโthe No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team defeated No. 21 San Jose State, 15-4. The Bruins scored 10 of the game's first 11 goals, with Alexis Angermund tallying her fifth career hat trick along the way.
Kelsey Blacker, Devin Grab, Maddie Musselman and Lizette Rozeboom also had multi-goal performances for UCLA (18-3, 1-1), with two scores apiece. Carlee Kapana (eight saves) and Jahmea Bent (five) split time in the cage.
A San Jose State (8-13, 0-1) exclusion at 5:19 of the opening frame provided the Bruins' with the first extra-player opportunity of the afternoonโand they would make the most of it. Myna Simmons cashed in her first home goal as a Bruin at 4:56, giving UCLA a 1-0 lead. Angermund would follow with a pair of first-quarter goals (3:03, 1:00) to extend the Bruin advantage to three. The Spartans' Tyanna Supreme chipped away at that lead as time ticked away in the first (0:05) to send the game to the second stanza with the Bruins leading, 3-1.
Blacker (6:48) and Musselman (6:25) quickly doubled that lead in the second quarter. Rachel Whitelegge's second goal of the season gave the Bruins an even half dozen, before Rozeboom tacked on her first of the day (3:32). Kapana turned away five shots in the quarter and surrendered just the lone goal before exiting at halftime.
Grab took advantage of a Spartan exclusion to open the second half (7:31), before Angermund completed her hat trick at 6:39. The Bruins called a timeout following a Spartan exclusion and orchestrated a Rozeboom scoring strike to put UCLA into double digits and give the junior her 33rd goal of the year (5:26). Musselman collected her 37th (2:11) to answer a Spartan extra-player goal by Lili Urvari (4:19) and send the game to the final quarter with UCLA leading by an 11-2 score.

Grab got scoring started again in the fourth to give UCLA a 10-goal lead at 7:15. Blacker's second followed shortly after (6:37) to match her career high. Lexi Liebowitz got on the board for the Bruins at 5:33 and has now scored in five of the Bruins' last six games. Jennifer Liu (5:03) and Sheila Jansen (2:12) doubled the Spartan goal total down the stretch before Emily Skelly became the eighth Bruin to score with her strike at 0:31 of the final frame.
Sunday's game marked the first of five straight home games for UCLA. The Bruins' will next welcome No. 15 Long Beach State (3 p.m.) and No. 13 Hartwick (5 p.m.) as part of a Saturday, March 24 doubleheader at Spieker.
