UCLA Wins Two Events Friday at Aztec Invite

March 23, 2018 | Track & Field

San Diego, Calif โ€“ Day two of the Aztec Invitational saw the Bruins start their outdoor season strong, as UCLA took home two event victories and six Top-5 finishes Friday at the SDSU Sports Deck.

Senior Kendall Gustafson was relentless in her 2018 outdoor debut in the heptathlon, sweeping the competition with seven event victories for a total of 5,691 points. Her mark was good for a 992-point victory and seventh place all-time in UCLA history.

"This was a remarkable performance," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Avery Anderson. "Kendall was able to go out and execute at a very high level in all seven events over two days. She stayed focused and self-motivated to achieve the things we've been training for. It's great to see her go out and put up that kind of score in less than ideal conditions."

UCLA's second event victory of the day came in the men's hammer throw, as junior Justin Stafford took home the win with a mark of 60.80m (199-05).

Freshman Alyssa Wilson made her outdoor debut for the Bruins in the women's hammer, placing second overall with a throw of 60.57m (198-08). Wilson's throw was good for seventh all-time in UCLA school history.

Junior Greta Wagner finished third overall in the women's pole vault, clearing 3.82m (12-06.25) in her 2018 debut. Junior Melissa Maneatis was right behind in fourth, clearing 3.72m (12-02.50). Elleyse Garrett competed unattached, finishing tied for first at 3.92m (12-10.25). Senior Reed Scale finished third in the men's competition, posting a clearance of 4.76m (15-07.25).

Junior Madison Moore led the way with a 13th-place finish in the women's 1,500m and a time of 4:40.09. Freshman Jacquelyn Hill made her outdoor debut for the Bruins, taking 17th overall with a time of 4:42.09. Senior Taylor Taite (4:49.08) and sophomore Lilly Schmidt (4:49.23) went 31-32 for UCLA, while freshman Kennedy Meyer took 41st overall with a time of 5:01.97. Sophomore Lucie Semone (5:05.22) and junior Jessica Cushing-murray (5:57.17) finished 46th and 51st, respectively.

The men's 1,500m competition saw junior Cole Smith finish 11th overall with a personal-best time of 3:56.79. Sophomore Tyler Janes was 27th with a time of 4:03.30.
