Track and Field Wraps Home Weekend with Five Wins

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The UCLA track and field team finished up its first weekend of home competition with the Jim Bush Legends Invitational, and the Bruins impressed with five event victories on the day and 16 additional Top-5 finishes.

The Bruins opened up their day with a pair of victories in the javelin competition. Freshman Ilaria Casarotto secured fifth place all-time in UCLA women's javelin history, throwing a lifetime best 47.24m (155-0) for the win. Junior AK Turner took down the men's field, throwing a season-best 59.13m (194-0) on his fourth attempt.

UCLA continued its hot start at the women's high jump, as junior Lillianna Hebert won the competition with a clearance of 1.72m (5-07.75). Senior Kaelin Davis (third) and sophomore Mikella Lefebvre-Oatis (fourth on attempts) both cleared 1.67m (5-05.75).

Redshirt junior Ashlie Blake was tremendous in the women's shot put competition, uncorking a lifetime-best throw of 17.73m (58-02.00) to move into fifth place all-time in UCLA school history. Freshman Alyssa Wilson was the collegiate runner-up, throwing 16.06m (52-08.25). In the men's shot put, junior Kai Wong posted an outdoor season best with a throw of 15.74m (51-07.75).

Wilson went on to take home the victory in the women's discus, going 51.11m (167-08) for the win. This was her second victory of the weekend, as she won the hammer throw on Friday evening. Blake took third in the discus with a throw of 47.66m (156-04). Junior Justin Stafford finished fifth in the men's discus with a throw of 47.30m (155-02).

The women's pole vault saw junior Greta Wagner take fourth place with a clearance of 3.85m (12-07.50). Junior Melissa Maneatis was sixth at 3.55m (11-07.75), while freshman Sienna Stinson finished in 12th place (3.10m, 12-10.00). In the men's competition, senior Reed Scale finished third overall with an outdoor season-best clearance of 4.96m (16-00.75).

Sophomore Riley Kelly put on a show in the men's 800m, finishing second overall with a lifetime-best time of 1:49.94, breaking the 1:50.00 barrier for the first time in his career. In the women's competition, freshman Jacquelyn Hill took second in her heat (fourth overall), crushing her personal best by almost three seconds with a time of 2:11.81. Junior Madison Moore took seventh with a time of 2:14.50. Freshman Paige Carter won her heat of the 800m in 2:18.97. Carter also went on to run 5:02.71 in the women's 1,500m, good for fifth place.

A trio of Bruins toed the line in the women's 100m hurdles. Senior Pattriana Perry led the way with a fifth-place finish, clocking a time of 13.95. Fellow senior Kendall Gustafson posted a lifetime-best time of 14.19 for seventh place, and junior Dominique Beltrez was ninth (14.65).

Seniors Jelvon Butler (11.89) and Ashley Lewis (12.02) went 2-3 in the Division I women's 100m. Butler (24.24) and Lewis (25.27) went on to finish second and eighth, respectively in the 200m. Sophomore Darius Smith took 10th in the men's 100m (11.07) and sixth in the 200m (22.83).

Senior Ratanya Washington clocked a time of 58.50 for seventh in the women's 400m.

Freshman Matthew DeRoos earned a Top-3 finish in the men's long jump, taking third overall with a leap of 6.73m (22-01.00). Gustafson tied for second in the women's competition, jumping 5.82m (19-01.25).

Senior Idrees Bernard took second in the Division I triple jump competition for the Bruins, going 14.18m (46-06.25). In the women's competition, senior Efe Agege finished fourth overall, posting a mark of 11.65m (38-02.75).

UCLA's next competition will be the Jim Click Multis in Tucson, Ariz., a two-day meet beginning Thursday, April 5.
