
Bruin Throwers to Compete at Pomona-Pitzer Invite

LOS ANGELES โ UCLA will be sending a group of five throwers to compete in the hammer, discus, and javelin competitions at the Pomona-Pitzer Invite on Saturday, April 7. The competition will be held at Stehle Track on the campus of Pomona College in Claremont, Calif.
Representing the Bruins in the hammer throw will be junior Justin Stafford and freshman Alyssa Wilson. Stafford enters the weekend in great form, as he took second place in the men's hammer at the Jim Bush Legends Invite with a career-best throw of 62.24m (204-02), breaking the 200-foot barrier for the first time this season. Wilson is coming off a victory in the event at the Bush Invite, where she posted a throw of 59.16m (194-01) for the win. Her season-best mark of 60.57m (198-08) is good for eighth all-time in UCLA history.
Wilson will additionally be throwing in the discus competition this Saturday, an event she also won this past weekend with a launch of 51.11m (167-08). Her lifetime-best mark in the event of 53.90m (176-10) is the 19th-best throw in the nation.
UCLA will be represented in the men's javelin by sophomores Connor Deverian, Simon Litzell, and Marian Spannowsky. This will be Deverian's second competition of the outdoor season, as he threw 57.48m (188-07) at the Aztec Invite in San Diego, good for seventh place overall.
Litzell and Spannowsky will both be making their outdoor debuts on Saturday. Litzell most recently threw 70.81m (232-03) at the Junior Swedish Championships to win the javelin competition. The mark is good for seventh all-time in UCLA school history. He also earned USTFCCCA second-team All-America accolades for his 16th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, throwing 69.14m (226-10). Spannowsky threw a lifetime best 226-01 at the 2017 NCAA West Regionals to move into ninth place all-time in school history in the event. He was a USTFCCCA All-America honorable mention for his 23rd-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
UCLA will see its first action with the women's hammer throw at 10:00 a.m. The men's javelin will kick off at 1:00 p.m., and the men's hammer and women's discus will follow at 1:30 p.m.
