UCLA Nabs 11 Top-5 Finishes on Last Day of Jacobs Inv.

April 21, 2018 | Track & Field

NORMAN, Okla. โ€“ The UCLA track and field team wrapped up competition at the John Jacobs Invitational, hosted by Oklahoma, on Saturday with a pair of event wins and 11 top-five finishes.

Alyssa Wilson, who finished second in both the shot put and hammer throw on Friday despite setting a UCLA freshman record of 61.43m in the latter, picked up her first event win of the weekend with a 51.56m (169-2) discus throw, giving her three wins out of the last four times she's competed in that event.

Joe Herrera ran the men's 400m in a time of 47.34, just improving on his time from last weekend, to give him his first event win of the 2018 outdoor season and give UCLA its second event win of the day. Senior Ratanya Washington was the lone Bruin to compete in the women's 400m, finishing third in her heat and sixth overall with a time of 59.17.

Junior Greta Wagner opened up for the Bruins at the John Jacobs Invite,ย reaching a 4.00m (13-1.5) mark in the women's pole vault โ€“ the best result by a Bruin in the 2018 outdoor season โ€“ ย to take second place. Junior Melissa Maneatis registered a 3.55m (11-7.75) vault to finish in eighth place.

In the women's long jump, junior Dominique Beltrez followed up her 4.88m mark at the Rafer Johnson/JJK Invite with a 4.86m (15-11.5) jump on Saturday. On the men's side, CJ Alumbres had a 6.63m (21-9) jump, his second best performance in that event this year, to finish fourth.

Three Bruins finished in the top-10 of the women's high jump, led by third-place finisher Kaelin Davis's 1.73m (5-8) result. That mark equaled her PR, which the senior set in last year's USC dual meet (Apr. 30, 2017). Lillianna Hebert and Kendall Gustafson (both had jumps of 1.65m for sixth and seventh place showing, respectively) each had solid showings in the high jump as well.

The UCLA 4X100m relay team of Beltrez, Ashley Lewis, Jelvon Butler, and Pattriana Perry raced to a 47.84 finish, good for third place.

Senior Ashley Lewis led the Bruin women in the 100m dash, finishing in fourth at 12.02. Meanwhile, Butler crossed the line in 12.47 seconds, good for a 14th place finish. With a time of 11.21, Darius Smith finished in 10th for UCLA in the men's 100m. He was the only Bruin to compete.

Reed Scale registered a pole vault of 4.70m (15-5) to finish second place in that event.

In the women's 800m, freshman Jacquelyn Hill finished in 2:20.89 for a fourth-place finish, tied for the best in her young career. Fellow freshman Paige Carter also competed in the 800m, recording a 15th place finish at 2:35.58. On the men's side, Tyler Janes notched a sixth-place finish among collegiate participants with a time of 1:56.75, in just his second time competing in that event at the NCAA level.

Hebert was the lone Bruin to compete in the triple jump on either the men's or the women's side, coming in fourth with an 11.53m (37-10) jump.

Competing in the 3000m steeplechase for the first time in her NCAA career, sophomore Lucie Semone grabbed a third-place finish with a time of 12:21.01.

On Friday night, junior AK Turner earned his second win of the season and third of his career in the men's javelin throw with a result of 59.93m (196-7).

UCLA concludes regular season competition next Sunday, Apr. 29, as its hosts USC in a dual meet at Drake Stadium.
