The Bruins were led by a pair of hat tricks from senior Austin Rone and sophomore Nicolas Saveljic. Redshirtย junior Alex Wolf got the start in the cage and had a stellar first half, making seven stops while allowing two goals. Freshman Danny Roland came on in relief in the second half and also made seven stops while surrendering five scores.
Freshman Ashworth Molthenย opened the scoring with a strike from the front court (6:27) and then sophomore Felix Brozyna-Vilim added a goal from two meters (5:58). Redshirtย sophomore Peter Lovasย made it 3-0 with a goal from the front court (4:54) and the rout was on. After a Jason Evezard penalty conversion (2:00) got the Anteaters on the board, the Bruins posted two more scores by the end of the period to take a 5-1 lead at the end of one quarter when Roneย scored back-to-back goals (1:37 and 0:00) from the front court.
Senior Warren Snyder opened the scoring in the second period when he punched in a shot off a rebound on a 6-on-5 opportunity (7:19) and Saveljic scored his first of the game after an ordinary foul (6:33) to extend the lead to 7-1. Evezardย scored his second of the game from the front court (4:39) to cut the lead to 7-2, but the Bruins would score the final two goals of the half. Roneย completed his hat trick on a score from the front court (2:36) and freshman Matthew Kacuraย added a goal from the front court (1:52) to put the Bruins up 9-2 at the break.
Saveljicย completed his hat trick with back-to-back goals from the front court to open the scoring in the third period (7:35 and 6:42), putting UCLA up 11-2. The two teams would trade goals for the rest of the period with the Bruins getting a power play goal from freshman Jake Cavano (3:28) and Kacura adding his second score from the front court (1:58) to give UCLA a 13-5 advantage heading into the fourth.
Jack Trushย opened the scoring in the final period with a strike from the front court (7:37) to cut the lead to 13-6, but sophomore Quinten Osborne answered with his 27th goal of the season (7:06) from two meters. The Bruins spent most of the fourth period running out the clock on offense and picking up defensive stops, Evezardย scored his fourth of the game on a power play (5:34) to provide the 14-7 final.
The Bruins return to action on Saturday, Sept. 29 when they travel to take on No. 6 Pacific (5-4) at 12:00 p.m. PT at Chris Kjeldsen Pool. The Tigers have lost three in a row and four of their last five, falling to California twice (11-8 and 10-8), UC Santa Barbara (13-11) and at USC (11-8). In the game against the Trojans, Pacific led 4-1 at the end of the first period.
