Bruins Blanked at No. 12 Stanford

September 30, 2018 | Men's Soccer

STANFORD, Calif. – The UCLA men's soccer team was dealt a 3-0 loss by No. 12 Stanford on Sunday night at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium, giving the Bruins a split in their opening weekend of Pac-12 action.

UCLA (5-4, 1-1) entered the contest coming off a 2-1 win at California on Thursday night, but struggled to contain Stanford (5-1-3, 2-0) in the second half, with the home team scoring all three of its goals in the latter period.

The Bruins had a slight advantage in the run of play in the first half, outshooting Stanford 4-1 and holding the Cardinal without a serious scoring opportunity.

UCLA had a trio of dangerous opportunities in the first half, first in the 30th minute when a Milan Iloski corner kick was almost headed in by a Stanford defender for an own goal.

Junior forward Mohammed Kamara then had a solid look at net from 25 yards out in the 35th minute, but his drive was stopped by Stanford keeper Andrew Thomas. Finally, redshirt junior Matthew Powell saw his 41st minute header off a corner go just high over the bar.

Stanford took control of the contest in the second half.

The Cardinal broke through in the 52nd minute, as Tanner Bearson sent in a low cross from the left side that went past a Stanford forward and settled at the feet of Charlie Wehan at the far post, who finished into the net for the eventual game-winner.

Amir Bashti doubled Stanford's lead in the 67th minute, finishing off a through ball in the 18 from Wehan. Jack O'Brien capped the scoring in the 80th minute, heading in his first career goal.

Kamara ended the game as the Bruins' shots leader with four.

UCLA returns to Wallis Annenberg Stadium next week to host Washington and Oregon State in league play. The Bruins and Huskies kick off at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday night. Both of next week's contests will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
