SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --ย No. 3 UCLA opened the 2019 season with a 10-6 win over CSUN (1-1) in the Bruins' first game of the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational on Friday afternoon at Campus Pool.

Freshman Val Ayala led the Bruins in scoring with a hat trick while junior Brooke Maxson scored twice. Senior Carlee Kapanaย got the start in the cage for the Bruins and had two saves in the first half while allowing two goals. Sophomore Jahmea Bentย played the entire second half in goal, registering three saves while surrendering four goals.

The Bruins got on the board first with a goal at two meters by senior Sarah Sheldon (6:56). The Matadors tied the game at 1-1 with a power play score from Jennalyn Barthels (6:09). Freshman Bella Baiaย scored the first goal of her collegiate career from the front court (4:11) to put UCLA back in front 2-1. Ayala scored her first goal from the front court (0:55) to end the scoring in the first period with the Bruins leading 3-1.

Tori Wilson scored the first goal of the second period for CSUN on a Matador power play (5:25). It was as close as they would get as the Bruins closed the period out on a 4-0 run. Redshirtย senior Grace Reego scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity (4:54) and then senior Lizette Rozeboomย added a goal on a counter (4:22) to push the lead to 5-2. A second strike from the front court by Ayala (3:37) followed to extend the lead to 6-2. Senior Rachel Whiteleggeย provided the 7-2 lead at the break with an exclusion goal (2:50).

The Bruins were held scoreless in theย third period, but allowed CSUN just one goal from McKenzie Beardsley (1:37) to take a 7-3 lead into the fourth period.

UCLA scored the first two goals of the fourth quarter with Ayala completing her hat trick on a power play (7:17), followed by a counter attack score from Maxson (6:30) to make it 9-3 Bruins. After a couple Matador scores, Maxson added another goal on a counter (2:55) to give UCLA a 10-5 lead. Sara Dempsey provided the 10-6 final with a score on a 6-on-5 with just 0:19 left in the game.

The Bruins return to action tomorrow to take on No. 6 UC Irvine (Campus Pool) at 9:45 a.m. PT, followed by a 1:30 p.m. bout with No. 24 Cal Baptist (Rec Center).
