
UCLA Wins Two on Saturday to Improve to 3-0

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- No. 3 UCLA improved to 3-0 on the year with a pair of victories at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 19. The Bruins opened with a 10-6 win over No. 6 UC Irvine at UCSB's Campus Pool in the morning and then followed that up with a 17-8 victory over No. 24 Cal Baptist in the afternoon at UCSB's Rec Center.
The Bruins led 2-1 after one period with power play goals from Ayala and Musselman. The lead grew to 5-2 at the break as UCLA scored on a penalty shot by Ayala, a power play goal from Rozeboom and a strike from the front court by Musselman. UCLA took an 8-4 lead into the fourth period after goals from the front court by Rozeboom and Halligan and a power play score from Ayala. Both teams scored twice in the fourth quarter with Musselman scoring both goals for UCLA (front court and power play).

In the win over the Lancers, the Bruins were led by three goals from senior Lizette Rozeboom and two scores from redshirt senior Grace Reego, freshman Bella Baia, senior Allison Wieseler, and sophomore Roxy Wheaton. Sophomore Jahmea Bent got the start and went the distance, recording seven saves while allowing eight goals.
The Bruins led 6-2 after one period with two counter attack goals from Rozeboom and one from Wheaton, a power play goal from senior Rachel Whitelegge and a goal at two meters from senior Sarah Sheldon and freshman Skylar Savar. The Bruins extended the lead to 11-4 by halftime. In the second quarter, Rozeboom scored from two meters, while Reego and Wheaton scored from the front court. Freshman Val Ayala and Baia each found the back of the net on Bruin power plays in the second period. UCLA led 14-5 after three periods with a penalty conversion by Baia and power play and counter attack scores from Wieseler. Both teams scored three goals in the fourth quarter with Reego scoring on a counter and juniors Emily Skelly and Brooke Maxson scoring on 6-on-5 opportunities.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow to take on No. 9 Michigan (Campus Pool) at 11:00 a.m. PT, followed by a 2:30 p.m. bout with No. 17 UC Santa Barbara (Campus Pool - LIVE STREAM).
