Bruins Bring Heat to Sun Devils in 4-1 Victory

October 06, 2019 | Women's Soccer

Tempe, Ariz. – No. 16 UCLA snapped a two-game losing streak with a big 4-1 victory over Arizona State. The Bruins scored four unanswered goals, including two in the first eight minutes of the game.

The Bruins (7-3-1, 1-2-0 in the Pac-12) mixed up their lineup, with Anika Rodriguez and Brianne Riley making their first starts of the season, and Karina Rodriguez moving up to a midfield position. The change paid off immediately, as Viviana Villacorta scored her first goal of the year just 1:12 into the match after a Bruin corner kick.

Kennedy Faulknor doubled the lead just six minutes later, with a close-range shot to quickly make it 2-0 Bruins. Villacorta assisted on the goal, which was Faulknor's second of the season.

The Rodriguez sisters teamed up for the Bruins' third goal in the 19th minute. After Anika Rodriguez was fouled just outside the box, she played a quick free kick, chipping it to Ashley Sanchez, who crossed to Karina Rodriguez in the box. Karina tapped it in to the left corner for her first goal of the year.

Armed with a 3-0 halftime lead, UCLA extended the advantage to four goals with an impressive individual effort by Sanchez at 49:57. Sanchez took the ball just beyond midfield, split two defenders and fired from about 22 yards out, above the reach of ASU goalkeeper Giulia Cascapera.

The Sun Devils (6-4-2, 0-2-1) took one back at 53:56, scoring on a Marleen Schimmer banger from outside the box, and Schimmer nearly scored another in the 68th minute, but Bruin goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy made a fingertip save to push it wide of goal.

UCLA outshot Arizona State 15-9 and held a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks. Brzykcy finished with three saves, while Cascapera totaled two for the Sun Devils.

The Bruins will next host Colorado on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 5pm in a doubleheader with the UCLA men's soccer team, who hosts Stanford at 8pm.
