
Bruins One Back After Day One in Hawaii

KA'ANAPALI, Hawaii - The Bruins are just one shot back of the overall lead after one round of the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational, shooting a 15-under 269 as a team on Friday at the Royal Ka'anapali Golf Course. UCLA is in solo third, just off the pace set by Kansas and Oklahoma (-16, 268).
Sophomore Bryan Wiyang Teoh was the low Bruin on Friday, firing a 5-under 66. Starting on the seventh, he made four birdies in his first eight holes on No. 9, 11, 12 and 14, adding birdies on No. 1 and 4, with only one bogey on the 15th. Teoh is two strokes behind leaders Garett Reband of Oklahoma and Andy Spencer of Kansas (-7, 64).
Junior Devon Bling and sophomore Sean Maruyama are each tied for 12th following rounds of 4-under 67. Bling, starting on the eighth, made a pair of birdies (No. 9 and 11) and three bogeys before getting hot to end his round, making five birdies in his final seven holes (No. 1, 3, 4, 6 and 7).
Maruyama, opening on the ninth hole, made an eagle on that par-5, adding another three on his scorecard on the par-5 first hole. Maruyama also had birdies on No. 11, 18 and 6, with one bogey and a double.
Senior Hidetoshi Yoshihara and junior Eddy Lai are both tied for 33rd, shooting 2-under 69s in round one. Both made four birdies, as Yoshihara gained strokes on No. 9 (opening hole), 12, 14 and 1 with two bogeys. Lai, starting on the seventh, made birdies on No. 9, 11, 15 and 5 and two bogeys. Freshman Chaz Aurilia, playing as an individual, shot a 1-under 70. Starting on the 18th, he made five birdies (No. 7, 9, 11, 15 and 16), two bogeys and a double.
Saturday's second round will be another shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. HT/11:30 a.m. PT.
