Bruins Close Fall Schedule at Royal Ka'anapali

KA'ANAPALI, Hawaii - The 23rd-ranked Bruins wrap up the fall portion of their 2019-2020 schedule this weekend at the Ka'anapali Classic Collegiate Invitational. The three-day, 54-hole tournament runs from Friday through Sunday at the Ka'anapali Golf Club Royal Course (par 71, 6,700 yards).

The starting fivesome for the Bruins will be senior Hidetoshi Yoshihara, juniors Devon Bling and Eddy Lai and sophomores Sean Maruyama and Bryan Wiyang Teoh. Freshman Chaz Aurilia will play as an individual. All three days of play will be a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. HT/11:30 a.m. PT. 

Joining the Bruins in the 20-team field are No. 5 Oklahoma, No. 15 Clemson, No. 18 Washington, No. 19 Georgia, No. 31 South Carolina, No. 37 Liberty, No. 44 Kansas, Air Force, Boise State, Connecticut, George Washington, Gonzaga, Hawaii, North Texas, Sacramento State, Southern Illinois, UC Santa Barbara, West Virginia and Wyoming.

The Bruins tied for fourth at last year's tournament, recording a 54-hole total of 27-under 825. Teoh was the top UCLA finisher at T-11 (-8, 205). Lai tied for 18th (-6, 207) and Bling tied for 26th (-4, 209).

UCLA, which is coming off a third-place finish in the Cypress Point Classic, a match-play event in Pebble Beach, has placed third (Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills, -5, 859) and fifth (Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational, +8, 872) in its two previous stroke-play tournaments this season.

Lai, who was named to the most recent Fred Haskins Award (most outstanding men's college golfer) Watch List, is coming off his first collegiate victory at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational. He finished the tournament at 7-under 209 to share medalist honors, shooting a 3-under 69 in round two and a 4-under 68 in round three, both of which were tied for the best round on the course that day. Lai opened the year with a T-5 showing at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills (-4, 212), closing with a 1-under 71 in round two and a 4-under 68 in round three.

Teoh has a pair of Top 20 showings this season, tying for 12th at Marquette (-1, 215), recording a 3-under 69 in the final round. He opened the Golf Club of Georgia Invite with a 2-under 70, tying for 19th (+2, 218).

Bling tied for 19th at the Marquette Intercollegiate (+2, 218) and tied for 35th at the Golf Club of Georgia Invite (+5, 221), recording a 2-under 70 in round one in Georgia. Yoshihara tied for 10th at Marquette (-2, 214), closing with a 1-under 71 and a 2-under 70 in his final two rounds, while also tying for 52nd in Georgia (+9, 225). Maruyama tied for 50th at Marquette (+11, 227) and tied for 71st (+16, 232) in Georgia. Aurilia will be playing as an individual for the second time after tying for 55th at the Bill Cullum Invitational (+6, 222), where he finished with a 3-under 69.
