STANFORD, Calif. --ย No. 3 UCLA (16-3, 1-2ย MPSF) fell at No. 1 Stanford (17-2, 2-1ย MPSF) on Saturday afternoon at Avery Aquatic Center. With the loss, the Bruins fell to 73-87 all-time against the Cardinal.

The Bruins were led by junior Nicolas Saveljicย and sophomore Matthew Kacura who each scored two goals. Freshman Bernardo Maurizi played the entire game in the cage, registering eight saves while allowing 17 goals.

Stanford jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter after goals by Ben Hallock (5:09), Tyler Abramson (4:38), Bennett Williams (3:23), Larsen Weigle (2:12), and Williams again (1:28).ย Saveljic scored a power play goal (1:07) to get the Bruins on the board. AJ Rossman scored a power play goal for Stanford (0:27) to give the Cardinal a 6-1 lead at the end of the first period.

The second period saw 12 combined goals scored by both teams (Stanford 7, UCLA 5). Sophomore Ashworth Molthen scored on a skipper on a 6-on-5 opportunity (7:22) to open the scoring in the second to cut the lead to 6-2. Rossman scored his second of the game from the front court (7:00) to push the lead to 7-2. Williams completed his hat trick with a shot from the front court (6:11) to make it 8-2.ย Kacura scored on a nearside skip shot (5:47) to cut it to 8-3. But Quinn Woodheadย scored his first goal on a deflected shot (4:41) from the front court to make it 9-3. Hallock then scored his second from two meters (3:58) to extend the lead to 10-3. Hallockย completed his hat trick with a score from the front court (3:11) to push the lead to 11-3. Junior Brozyna-Vilimย made it 11-4 (2:31) with a power play goal. But Woodhead answered with his second goal on a power play (1:54) to make it 12-4. Saveljic replied with a strike from the front court (1:41) to cut the deficit to 12-5. Then Parker Killion scored his first goal of the game from the front court (0:31) to extend the lead to 13-5. Sophomore Jake Cavano scored the final goal of the second period (0:13) with a shot from the front court to cut the deficit to 13-6 at the break.

Rossman completed his hat trick with a goal from the front court (3:41) to open the scoring in the third quarter, putting Stanford up 14-6. Kacura then scored his second of the game from the front court (2:48) to make it 14-7. Hallock scored his fourth of the game on a power play (2:15) and UCLA freshman Jack White answered with an exclusion goal (1:40) to make it 15-8 to end the scoring in the third.

Cavanoย opened the scoring in the fourth period with his second goal from the front court (5:47) to trim the deficit to 15-9. Hallock scored his fifth of the game with a double-bar-in shot from set (5:05) to make it 16-9. Williams added his fourth of the game on a power play (4:15) to extend the lead to 17-9. Freshman Tommy Gruwell scored on a power play (2:15) to get the Bruins into double digits, trailing 17-10. Freshman Max Berg scored on a nice drive and finish (0:46) off a nice feed from freshman Andy Rodgers to provide the 17-11 final.

The Bruins return to action next week when they return to the Bay Area for the 2019 MPSF Men's Water Polo Championship, held at California Nov. 22-24.
