IRVINE, Calif. -- No. 3 UCLA (16-3) settled for fourth place after dropping an overtime heartbreaker to No. 4 California (10-2) on Sunday afternoon, 7-6, at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational at UC Irvine Aquatics Center. All 16 teams in the field are nationally ranked with every team in the Top 10 represented.
In the loss to the Golden Beas, the Bruins were led by junior Maddie Musselman who scored two goals. Senior Carlee Kapana started in goal for UCLA, going the distance, recording 10 saves while surrendering seven goals.
California shut the Bruins out of the scoring column in the first half and took a 4-0 lead into the break at halftime.
But the Bruins returned the favor in the second half, scoring four goals while shutting out Cal, sending the game into overtime. Musselman scored the only goal of the third period from the front court at the 3:11 mark.
After going 0-for-7 on power plays to open the game, the Bruins scored three power play goals in the fourth to tie the game at 4-4. The exclusion goals were provided by redshirt senior Grace Reego (7:11), freshman Katrina Drake (4:51) and freshman Val Ayala (2:56).
Musselman gave UCLA its first lead of the game with her second goal and the Bruins' fifth-straight goal on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 0:41 left in the first overtime period. But the Golden Bears tied it just five seconds later on a power play goal by Elli Potropapas. Then Cal regained the lead at the buzzer when Hannah Derose scored a power play goal to give the Golden Bears a 6-5 lead heading into the second overtime. In that period, Cal pushed the lead to 7-5 with a goal from the front court by Kitty Lynn Joustra (2:09). Freshman Ava Johnson trimmed the lead to 7-6 with 1:34 to go in the final overtime period with a power play strike. The Bruins had one final chance with under a minute to go, but couldn't capitalize on a power play.
UCLA returns to action on Sunday, March 3, when it hosts California in its MPSF opener at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center at Noon PT.
