No. 3 UCLA Cruises Past No. 7 Pacific, 10-7

LOS ANGELESย --ย No. 3 UCLA (20-3, 3-0) won its final non-conference game of the 2019 regular season with a 10-7 victory over No. 7 Pacific on Friday night at Dirks Pool at Spiekerย Aquatics Center. With the win, the Bruins improved to 24-0 all-time against the Tigers.
In the win over Pacific, the Bruins were led by juniorย Maddie Musselman, senior Sarah Sheldon and freshman Ava Johnson, who all scored twice. Seniorย Carlee Kapanaย got the starting nod in the cage for UCLA and had a solid outing with seven saves while allowing four goals in three quarters of action. Sophomoreย Jahmea Bentย came on in relief in the fourth period and made one saveย while allowing threeย scores.
Pacific got the first goal of the game when Kyra Christmas scored the first of her game-high three goals from the front court (6:13). But UCLA reeled off five straight goals for a lead it would never relinquish. Johnson got the Bruins on the board from two meters (5:51) and then UCLA scored three in a row on counter attacks, the first by junior Bronte Halligan (1:31) and the final two by Musselman (0:41 and 0:13), that gave UCLA a 4-1 lead at the end of the first period.
UCLA led 7-2 at halftime after netting three power play goals in the second period. Junior Brooke Maxson (7:17), Sheldon (5:15), and Johnson (0:56) each scored on 6-on-5 opportunities for the Bruins in the second quarter.
The Tigers won the third quarter, 2-1, and the fourth, 3-2, but were never able to get closer than three goals. Freshman Katrina Drake scored the only goal for the Bruins in the third period (6:04) with a strike from the front court. The Bruins got beautiful back-handed goals at set from Sheldon (6:35) and senior Lizette Rozeboomย (3:49) in the fourth period to provide the 10-7 final.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday, April 6 when they visit No. 2 Stanford for a 3:00 p.m. PT tilt on the Pac-12 Networks.
