STANFORD, Calif. -- No. 3 UCLA (20-4, 3-1) dropped its first MPSF match of the year at No. 1 Stanford (16-1, 4-0) on Saturday afternoon at Avery Aquatics Center. The Bruins put a scare into the nation's top-ranked team, but fell in the final seconds, 7-6.

The Bruins were led by junior Maddie Musselman who scored two goals. Senior Carlee Kapana got the starting nod in the cage for UCLA and had a solid outing, tying her season-high of 12 saves while holding the Cardinal to just seven scores.

The Bruins were shutout in the first period but held Stanford to just two goals. Makenzie Fischer scored the first goal of the game (5:25) on a counter and Kat Klass used a lob shot (2:13) to put the Cardinal up 2-0 at the end of the first period.

The Stanford defense pitched another shutout in the second period but the Cardinal only tacked on one more goal to take a 3-0 lead into the break. Fischer scored her second of the game on a nearside skipper (5:15).

Fischer completed her hat trick with the first goal of the third period at the 6:56 mark to push the lead to 4-0, but then UCLA reeled off five straight. Freshman Ava Johnson took a feed from Musselman to score on a power play (5:29) to trim the deficit to 4-1. Then Musselman got in on the scoring act with a power play goal (2:39) to end the scoring in the third with Stanford clinging to a 4-2 advantage.

Freshman Val Ayala opened the scoring in the fourth to cut the lead to 4-3 with a power play goal (6:30). Then junior Bronte Halligan buried a powerful skip shot in the back of the cage to tie it at 4-4 with 4:44 remaining in the game. Two minutes later, senior Lizette Rozeboom scored from the front court with a superb back-handed shot (2:44) to give UCLA its first lead of the game. Fischer scored her fourth of the game on a power play for Stanford to tie it at 5-5 (2:30). After each team made defensive stops, the Bruins called timeout and designed a play which Musselman converted for her second score with a cross-cage top shelf shot to put the Bruins back in front at 6-5 (1:21). But Fischer answered from the front court, her fifth of the game (0:52) to tie it up at 6-6. Stanford made a defensive stop on the Bruins' next possession and Aria Fischer scored from two meters with 0:05 remaining to provide the 7-6 final.

UCLA returns to action on Sunday, April 7 when they visit No. 18 San Jose State for a 12:00 p.m. PT tilt at West Valley College.
