UCLA Men Tops USC, as Bruins Split Dual Meet With Trojans

LOS ANGELES โ In a front of a jam-packed Loker Stadium & Cromwell Field, the UCLA track & field program saw the Bruin men come away with a 102-60 win over eighth-ranked USC on Sunday afternoon, giving the Bruins 42 wins in the last 53 meetings.

The win marked the first over USC for Director of Track & Field / Cross Country Avery Anderson, as the Bruins mustered 19 first-place finishes between the men and women.

Despite some strong individual performances, including PR's from sprinter Meleni Rodney, distance runner Claire Markey and thrower Ilaria Casarotto, the USC women ultimately prevailed over the Bruins, 90-69.

UCLA started the meet on Saturday by winning the men's and women's hammer, getting first-place finishes from Justin Stafford (67.33m; 220-11) and Alyssa Wilson (68.17m; 223-8).

Wilson went on to sweep her throwing events, winning the shot put with a mark of 17.14m (56-3) before taking home the discus with a PR of 56.97m (186-11).

Michael Fancey PR'ed in the pole vault to earn first place, clearing 5.22m (17-1.5), followed by Tate Curran (5.12m; 16-9.5) and Kyle Brown (4.97m; 16-3.5) to give the Bruins nine points.

Dotun Ogundeji scored 10 points for the UCLA men, notching first-place finishes in both the shot put (20.09m; 65-11) and discus (56.93m; 186-9).

Harrison Schrage also dialed in 10 points for UCLA. The transfer out of Arkansas leapt his way to first-place finishes in the long jump (7.73m; 25-4.5) and triple jump (14.51m; 47-7.25).

Seth Holloway (10.37) and Leon Powell (10.39) combined for four points in the 100m dash, as they finished second and third, respectively. Powell went on to finish second in the 200m with a season-best time of 21.06.

In the 400m dash, Joe Herrera (46.81) and Cameron Stone (47.54) went 2-3, while Riley Kelly earned three points in the 800m run with a time of 1:51.49.

It was all UCLA in the men's 1500m run, led by Robert Brandt, who competed in the event for the first time and finished first at 3:44.66. He was followed by a PR from Chris Morzenti (3:46.12) and a third-place finish by Tyler Janes (3:46.94).

It was a photo finish in the men's 3000m steeple, as Munir Kabbara fought back to defeat USC's Mitch Libby thanks to a 10-second PR of 9:17.14.

Isaiah Holmes won the high jump at 2.20m (7-2.5), while Simon Litzell took home the javelin with a throw of 67.76m (222-4), followed by AK Turner's 63.77m (209-3).

In addition to Wilson's 15-point outing, UCLA's performance on the women's side was highlighted by Rodney's PR (52.18) that earned her first place in the 400m dash, Markey's PR (10:30.41) in the steeple and Casarotto's first-place PR of 51.53m (169-1) in the javelin. Rodney's mark ranks eighth in program history; Markey's, fourth; and Casarotto's, second.

Christina Rice helped UCLA get five points in the 1500m run thanks to a winning time of 4:24.26, while Jacquelyn Hill picked up a point in the 800m run (2:11.38). The Bruins dialed in all nine points in the 3000m run, led by Jackie Garner's first-place time of 10:14.22.

Tarika Moses placed second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 59.64, while Melissa Maneatis capped her dual career by winning the pole vault at 3.31m (10-10.25).

Lauren McFall chipped in three more points in the javelin, posting a top throw of 43.35m (142-3), a PR for the freshman.
