LOS ANGELES -- No. 2 UCLA (9-1) dropped its first game of the 2019 season, falling to No. 3 Stanford, 13-9, in the finals of the 2019 SoCal Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins fell to 73-86 all-time against Stanford, which improved to 10-1 on the year.

The Bruins were led by sophomore Ashworth Molthen, who had a hat trick and added one assist. Redshirt senior Alex Wolf played the entire game in the cage, registering five saves while allowing 13 goals.

UCLA trailed 3-2 at the end of the first period after getting goals from sophomore Jake Cavano (3:49) and freshman Andy Rodgers (0:35, power play).

Stanford dominated the second period, outscoring the Bruins 4-1, to build a 7-3 lead at the break. After the Cardinal reeled off three straight goals to lead 6-2, junior Chasen Travisano took a pass from Molthen and scored at even strength (0:35) to end the scoring drought. But Stanford's Ben Hallock added his second goal of the contest on a redirect to end the scoring in the period (0:14).

The Bruins' offense caught fire in the third period, dropping a five-spot on the board. The Bruins received one goal each from freshman Tommy Gruwell (6:55, power play), junior Felix Brozyna-Vilim (4:21) and sophomore Matthew Kacura (2:11, power play). Molthen scored his first on a power play (5:12) and his second at even strength (0:59) ended the scoring in the third with the Bruins trailing 10-8.

But the fourth period was owned by the Stanford defense, which allowed just one more goal by Molthen at even strength (5:15) in the quarter. The Cardinal tacked on three more goals at full strength to seal the 13-9 final.

UCLA returns to action on Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m. PT when they host Long Beach State in the Centennial game. Make sure you arrive early to get your Centennial collector's pin. The game against the 49ers is the fourth of nine straight home dates for UCLA.
