Bruins Defeat No. 12 Princeton, 14-5

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- No. 2 UCLA (2-0) scored the first three goals of the game and cruised to a 14-5 victory over No. 12 Princeton (1-1) at the Navy Open on Saturday afternoon at Lejeune Hall. The Bruins improved to 15-0 all-time against the Tigers.

The Bruins were led by sophomore Michael Graner who scored a game- and career-high three goals. Redshirt senior Alex Wolf played the entire game in goal, registering seven saves while allowing five goals (which included one penalty and two power play goals).

Freshman Tommy Gruwell continued his hot start to the season, scoring the game's first goal on a Bruin power play (7:39) on the opening possession of the game. Junior Felix Brozyna-Vilim made it 2-0 with a goal from two meters (6:48). Sophomore Ashworth Molthen put the Bruins up 3-0 with a power play strike (3:21). After a power play goal by Princeton, sophomore Jake Cavano pushed the lead to 4-1 with a power play goal (2:24). Freshman Cameron Reagan ended the scoring in the first period with a score from the front court (0:17) to put UCLA up 5-1.

Sophomore Matthew Kacura opened the scoring in the second quarter (7:22) with a shot from the front court to extend the lead to 6-1. The two teams traded goals for the rest of the period with the Bruins getting two scores from the front court by freshman Jack White (4:47 and 2:06) to take an 8-4 lead into the break.

After giving up a counter goal in the final second of the second quarter, the Bruins' defense pitched a shutout in the third. Graner scored back-to-back goals in the quarter with a power play goal (5:41) and a front court goal (4:08) to make it 10-4. Freshman Gabe Discipulo ended the scoring in the third on a 6-on-5 opportunity (0:51) to take an 11-4 win into the final stanza.

Princeton's Sean Duncan scored from two meters (6:20) to open the scoring in the fourth, trimming the Bruins' lead to 11-5. But UCLA scored the final three goals of the game to provide the 14-5 final. Graner completed his hat trick with a goal from the front court (5:55), then Molthen netted his second of the game with an exclusion goal (4:46). Kacura ended the scoring with his second of the game on a power play (3:33).

UCLA returns to action tomorrow when they face the hosts, Navy (1-1) at 6:15 a.m. PT in their third game of the Navy Open.
