No. 10 UCLA Makes History in Win Over ASU

January 03, 2020 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – The 10th-ranked UCLA women's basketball team had to fight till the very end, but when the final buzzer sounded, the Bruins had earned their place in history, defeating Arizona State, 68-66 on Friday night in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The win sealed the best start to a season in program history at 13-0, surpassing the 12-0 mark by the 1980-81 squad.

Japreece Dean led a trio of Bruins in double figures with 23 points to go with five assists and three rebounds. She scored 15 of her 23 in the second half and tied her career-high with five 3-pointers made for the fourth time. Lindsey Corsaro added 12 points while freshman Charisma Osborne chipped in 10 points (all in the first half).

After a wild start that saw Onyenwere pick up a foul on the opening tip, the Bruins went on an 11-0 run with the game tied at 2-2. UCLA made three 3-pointers in the run, one each by Dean, Natalie Chou, and Osborne, to lead 13-2 with 5:46 to go in the first. Then the Bruins missed 10 straight shots, allowing ASU to close the gap to 13-9 (7-0 run) at the 1:39 mark. Dean hit her second trey with 0:08 remaining to give the Bruins an 18-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Chou's second 3-pointer of the first half put UCLA up 24-15 at the 7:19 mark of the second quarter. But the Sun Devils went on a 7-0 run to pull to within 24-22 by the media timeout (4:59). ASU took its first lead of the game at 27-26 on a lucky 3-pointer that banked in with the shot clock expiring by Ja'Tavia Tapley with 3:46 left in the period. But Corsaro answered with a 3-pointer of her own just 12 seconds later to give the Bruins back the lead (29-27). With the game tied at 31-31 after a Tapley layup (2:12), UCLA made a mini 6-0 run, before Eboni Walker made a baseline jumper at the buzzer to cut the Bruin lead to 37-33 at the break.

Reili Richardson drained a 3-pointer to put ASU up 43-41 with 7:16 to go in the third quarter, capping a 10-4 start to the period by the Sun Devils. But Corsaro answered with her second long-range bomb to put the Bruins up 44-43 a minute later. Onyenwere picked up her second and-one of the third period (1:16) and completed the three-point-play to put the Bruins back in front at 54-53. Both teams missed 3-pointers in the final five seconds of the period, which ended in a 56-56 tie.

The Bruins led 60-58 when Dean drained another 3-pointer to put UCLA up five with 5:43 remaining in the fourth quarter. It was the largest lead of the second half by either team. But ASU tied the game at 63-63 after a 3-pointer by Robbi Ryan (5:17) and a layup by Richardson (4:28). With the game tied at 65-65, Dean made her fifth 3-pointer of the game (1:59) to put the Bruins up three. After a free throw by Kiara Russell (1:20) cut the Bruins' lead to 68-66, both teams made defensive stops down the stretch. The Sun Devils had many chances in the final 46 seconds as the Bruins failed to rebound. ASU had the last five rebounds of the game (four offensive), leading to five shots in the final 0:46 that all missed their target. Neither team led by more than five points in the second half that featured seven ties and 10 lead changes.

The Bruins (13-0, 2-0 Pac-12) held a 27-17 rebounding advantage at halftime, but lost the battle of the boards, 44-36, for the game. ASU had 20 offensive rebounds for the game (16 in the second half), but managed to only score eight second-chance points compared to 18 for the Bruins.

The Sun Devils dropped to 10-4 (0-2) with their eighth-straight loss to UCLA. Arizona State was led by Ryan's 17 points. Tapley finished with 10 points and seven rebounds for ASU.

UCLA continues Pac-12 play with a home matchup against Arizona on Sunday, Jan. 5 in a battle of undefeated teams. There are only six undefeated teams left in the country (UConn, NC State, Oregon State, and Kansas are the others). The game will be televised on Pac-12 Networks and tip off at 12:00 p.m. PT.
