Bruins Victorious in Battle of Undefeated Ranked Teams

January 05, 2020 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – In a battle of undefeated teams, No. 10 UCLA caught fire from beyond the arc in the second half and ran away with a 70-58 win over No. 18 Arizona on Sunday afternoon in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The win extended the Bruins' record-setting start to a season at 14-0 and also extended their home-court winning streak to 12, including six straight in league play. There are now only four undefeated teams left in the country (UCLA, UConn, NC State, and Oregon State).

Michaela Onyenwere paced the UCLA attack with her fourth double-double of the season and the 20th of her career with 18 points and 13 rebounds (tied her season-best). Junior Chantel Horvat came off the bench to register her first career double-double with 10 points and tying her career-high of 10 rebounds. Freshman Charisma Osborne scored in double figures for the seventh time this season and the third-straight game with 10 points.

Arizona came out and threw the first punch, leading 7-2 after a jumper by Aari McDonald at the 7:44 mark of the first quarter. But the Bruins responded with a 12-2 run over the next five-plus minutes as Arizona shot 1-for-7 from the field to take a 14-9 lead after a pair of free throws by Japreece Dean (2:46). The Wildcats scored the final eight points of the quarter, which culminated in a 3-pointer by McDonald with 0:36 left that gave Arizona a 17-14 lead at the end of the first.

The Bruins opened the second quarter by scoring the first eight points to take a 22-17 lead after a 3-pointer by freshman Jaden Owens, only her third trey of the season (6:54). After another layup by McDonald (4:27) cut the lead to 24-22, UCLA reeled off five straight points which included a 3-pointer by Horvat (4:06) that put the Bruins up 29-22. Arizona went on a 7-0 run to tie it at 29-29 (2:10) that included a fortunate bank shot for the 'Cats from long-range by Amari Carter. The second quarter ended with both teams tied at 31-31. The Bruins were a paltry 4-for-13 from the free-throw line in the first half, keeping Arizona in the game.

UCLA came out firing from beyond the arc in the third period with Osborne, Onyenwere, Lindsey Corsaro, and Dean (first field goal of the game) draining 3-pointers to help the Bruins build their first double-digit lead of the game at 47-36 (5:19). Osborne drained another 3-pointer that extended the lead to 14 points (54-40) with 3:27 to go in the third. Horvat's second long-range bomb ended the scoring in the third and gave the Bruins their then-largest lead of the game at 59-44.

The Bruins' defense went on lock down in the fourth period holding the Wildcats without a field goal for the first 4:01 of the quarter while pushing their lead to 65-46 (largest of the game) behind the play of Horvat and Onyenwere. UCLA went into shutdown mode on offense trying to run out the shot clock on each possession and then cleared its bench with 1:31 to go, leading 70-55.

The Bruins (14-0, 3-0 Pac-12) dominated on the boards, 47-33, but lost the battle of the turnovers for the first time this season, 18-13. UCLA won the game in bench production with the Bruins outscoring the Wildcats 22-3.

The Wildcats (13-1, 2-1 Pac-12), who hadn't allowed an opponent to score 60 or more points this season, gave up 70 to the Bruins, including 39 in the second half (28 in the third and decisive quarter).  McDonald finished with a game-high 19 points while Cate Reese scored 12 and Thomas chipped in 10.

UCLA hits the road for its first Pac-12 road swing of the season when they travel to Salt Lake City to take on Utah on Friday, Jan. 5 at 6:00 p.m. PT on the Pac-12 Networks. The game will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
