Women’s 4x400m Relay Squad, Higgins II Break UCLA Records to Cap MPSF Championships

February 29, 2020 | Track & Field

SEATTLE, WASH. – Day two of the MPSF Indoor Championships proved to be an historic one for UCLA track and field, as the Bruins posted their second and third school records of the weekend en route to a pair of top-5 team finishes.

The Bruin men totaled 58 points over the weekend and finished fourth in the team standings. The women's squad finished tied for fifth with 54 points.

The UCLA women's 4x400m relay squad – Makenzy Pierre-Webster, Catherine Leger, Shae Anderson, and Meleni Rodney – notched a stellar performance in the Bruins' final event of the meet, posting the fastest time in UCLA indoor history at 3:30.28. and the third-fastest time in the country. The Bruins were also one of two teams to break the facility record at Dempsey Indoor. The quartet took down the school indoor record after checking in at No. 2 all-time with a time of 3:34.42 at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational on Feb. 13.

Sophomore Kenroy Higgins II made UCLA history in the 60m dash, clocking a time of 6.59 to break the program indoor record in the event. Higgins II ducked under Damian Allen's previous mark of 6.61 – set back in 1999 – to become the first Bruin to ever break the 6.60 barrier in the event. Junior Myles Webb also made the men's 60m final, going 6.77 for seventh overall. Freshman Chinyere Okoro finished sixth in the women's final with a time of 7.48.

With Christina Rice's record in the 5000m last night, the Bruins posted three program-record indoor marks this weekend and have set six in total this season.

Alyssa Wilson continued her dominant 2020 indoor season Saturday, completing the double in the throws with a victory in the shot put. She tossed the shot 16.95m (55-07.50) on her second attempt, a mark that would hold for the victory and give Wilson her 10th win in the throws this year. Redshirt sophomore Jacob Wilson picked up five points for the Bruin men with a fourth-place finish in the shot, posting a career-best mark 18.34m (60-02.00).

The UCLA men's squad was also aided by a third-place performance by Isaiah Holmes in the heptathlon, the first full heptathlon for the senior. Holmes compiled 5,517 points for third place overall and the fifth-best mark in the event in UCLA indoor history. The Roseville, Calif., native posted top-3 performances in four events, including a win in the heptathlon high jump, going 2.11m (6-11.00) for the victory.

The men's team also picked up points in the middle-distance races. Senior Riley Kelly finished in second place in the 800m, crossing the line at 1:49.98, just nine one-hundredths of a second behind the winner. Junior Chris Morzenti picked up his third-straight PR in the mile, going 4:02.15 for sixth place overall and three points for the Bruins.

In her 2020 track debut, junior Erika Adler finished ninth overall in the women's 3000m. She posted a time of 9:32.30, the ninth-fastest mark in UCLA indoor history. George Gleason led the way for the Bruins in the men's competition, going 9:09.85 for 12th place overall.

The Oregon women notched 104 points for the team victory at the MPSF Indoor Championships. BYU emerged victorious on the men's side, totaling 80 points for the league indoor title.
