No. 2 UCLA Returns to Action After 12-Day Hiatus

LOS ANGELES โ No. 2 UCLA (17-2, 1-0 MPSF) returns to action after a 12-day hiatus to resume MPSF play this week at No. 8 California (11-5, 0-0 MPSF) on Saturday, March 7 at the Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley, Calif. The game with the Golden Bears is slated to start at 12:00 p.m. PT. Then the Bruins will step outside of league play.to face No. 23 Pacific (2-11) for the third time this season (Michigan Invitational and Barbara Kalbus Invitational) for a 1:00 p.m. PT tilt on Sunday, March 8 at Chris Kjeldsen Aquatics Complex in Stockton, Calif.

SERIES HISTORY
This will be the 72nd meeting between UCLA and California with the Bruins leading the all-time series 58-13. The Bruins and the Golden Bears met up three times last year with California winning the first meeting, 7-6, in overtime in the third-place game of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational in Irvine, Calif., on Feb. 24. The very next game, the two teams met again with UCLA prevailing, 9-7, to open MPSF play at UCLA on March 3. UCLA won the rubber match, defeating Cal, 7-6, in the third-place game of the MPSF Championship at Stanford on April 28. This will be the 27th meeting all-time between Pacific and UCLA with the Bruins leading the series 26-0. The Bruins won the last meeting against the Tigers, 14-3, in the first round of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational this year (Feb. 21) and also defeated the Tigers, 14-7, earlier this season at the Michigan Invitational (Jan. 25).
RECAPPING LAST WEEK
While the Bruins were off last week, they finished third at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational (Feb. 23), beating No. 3 Hawai'i, 10-5, in the third-place game. No. 4 USC defeated the Bruins in the semifinals, 9-7 (Feb. 22). UCLA defeated No. 10 Michigan, 7-2 (Feb. 22), in the quarterfinals and No. 21 Pacific, 14-3 (Feb. 21) in the first round.
PALMER NAMED MPSF/KAP7ย NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK
UCLA'sย Abbi Hillย (Santa Barbara, CA/Dos Pueblos HS) has been named the MPSF/KAP7 Newcomer of the Week as announced by the league office on Feb. 5.ย The freshman utility tied for the team lead in goals, steals, and field blocks and led in total points as the Bruins improved to 10-1 overall and 1-0 in the MPSF (Jan. 31-Feb. 1).ย UCLA opened with an 18-10 conference win over No. 13 San Jose State with Hill scoring four goals on six shots. Hill added two assists, two steals, one field block, and one drawn exclusion. Then she scored one goal and added one steal and two assists in a 16-10 win over No. 12 Fresno State.ย Hill, the UCLA and MPSF leader in goals scored (29) in 2020, has earned an MPSF weekly honor in three consecutive weeks.ย For the week, Hill scored five goals on 10 shots over two games, and tallied four assists for a team-leading nine points.

She dished four assists and scored twice in that contest, while adding two steals and drawing one exclusion.ย This is the first career MPSF honor for Palmer.

Hill scored a game-high three goals in a one-goal loss to No. 11 UCSB, along with the eventual game-winning goal in the fourth period against UC San Diego. For the week, Hill totaled nine goals, five steals (three vs. UCSD), four assists, four drawn exclusions, and two field blocks over five games in her hometown. During the offseason, UCLA women's water polo hired James Robinson as an assistant coach to replace Kodi Hill.

Adam Wright is in his third season as UCLA's head men's water polo coach in 2019 with an overall record of 64-17 (.790) and an MPSF mark of 7-5 (.583).ย On July 20, 2017, UCLA Director of Athletics, Dan Guerrero, announced that Wrightย will guide both the UCLA men's and women's water polo teams.

Junior Maddie Musselman secured ACWPCย first team All-America acclaim for the third time in her career. Junior Bronte Halligan picked up second team acclaim while seniorsย Carlee Kapanaย and Lizette Rozeboom as well as freshman (now sophomore) Val Ayala were named honorable mention All-America selections. For the second straight season, a total of 12 Bruins claimed ACWPC All-Academic honors.
