No. 3 UCLA Remains Undefeated at No. 6 Michigan, 13-9

ANN ARBOR, Mich. --ย No. 3 UCLA (9-0) remained undefeated on the year after posting a 13-9 win at No. 6 Michiganย (5-3) to conclude play atย the Michigan Invitational on Sunday afternoonย atย Canham Natatorium.ย The Bruins improved to 29-0 all-time against the Wolverines.
The Bruins were led by senior Maddie Musselman who scored a career-high six goals and added two steals and one field block against UM. Freshman Molly Renner was the only other Bruin to score more than one goal when she added a buzzer beater in the fourth to finish with two scores.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Georgia Phillips got the start in the cage and went the distance, registeringย 12 saves while allowing nine goals. She also registered two steals.
Erin Neustromย led the Wolverines with three goals.
PERIOD ONE
> UCLA outscored Michigan 5-4 in the opening period.
> Musselman got the Bruins on the board first with a goal from the front court (6:49).
> Senior Ava Johnson made it 2-0 with a goal from two meters (5:56).
> After a goal by Michigan (4:58), freshman Nicole Struss pushed the lead to 3-1ย (2:47).
>ย Renner scored on a counter (2:24) to extend the lead to 4-1.
> The Wolverines scored back-to-back goalsย (2:11 and 1:36) to cut the deficit to 4-3.
> Musselman scored her second goal of the game (1:17) to give the Bruins a 5-3 advantage.
> Ava Morrant ended the scoring in the first with a goal for the Wolverines (0:46) to trim UCLA's lead to 5-4.

PERIOD TWO
> The Bruins outscored the Wolverines 2-1ย in the second period.
> Musselman scored two straight for the Bruins (2:44 andย 1:35) to open the scoring in the second frame to put the Bruins up 7-4.
> Michigan converted a penalty shotย (0:59) to end the scoring in the first half.
> UCLA led 7-5 at the break.

PERIOD THREE
> The Bruins outscoredย Michigan 4-3.
> Musselman scored her fifth of the game on a power play (6:09) to push the lead to 8-5.
> After a goal by the Wolverinesย (5:56), senior Katrina Drake found the back of the net on a power play just 10 seconds later (5:46).
> Michigan got another goal (5:25), but Musselman delivered her career-high sixth goal (3:45) to push the lead back to three at 10-7.
> Freshman Emma Linebackย scored her first of the game (1:24) to make it 11-7.
> The Wolverines would end the scoring in the third (0:54) on a goal at even strength, but UCLA would take an 11-8 leadย into the final quarter.
PERIOD FOUR
> The Bruins won the fourth quarter 2-1ย to provide the 13-9 final score.
> Junior Hannah Palmer scored her first goal of the season to open the scoring in the final frameย (3:19), extending the lead to 12-8.
> After a power play goal by the Wolverines (1:19), Renner scored her second of the game just beforeย the buzzer (0:01) to end the scoring.

The Bruins will host No. 12 San José State in their home opener in a league contest on Friday, Feb. 4 under the lights of Spieker Aquatics Center at 7:00 p.m. PT.
