Turner Hat Trick Highlights Bruin Win over Beavers

October 02, 2022 | Women's Soccer

Corvallis, Ore. โ€“ Junior forward Reilyn Turner dropped a first-half hat trick to lead No. 1 UCLA to a 5-0 victory over Oregon State. Sunshine Fontes and Sofia Cook also scored for the Bruins, who improved to 11-0 overall and 3-0 in Pac-12 play.

Turner scored the first of her three goals just 49 seconds into the game. Lilly Reale started the play by sending a ball through to Ally Cook, who drew out the goalkeeper and hit Turner with a cross. Turner one-timed it into the back of the net for the early lead.

Sofia Cook set up Turner for goal number two at 17:48, sending forward a pass that Turner raced past two defenders to collect. With Oregon State goalkeeper Hailey Coll trying to cut her off at the right post, Turner sent a sliding shot far post to score her second of the game.

Less than two minutes later, Turner had her second collegiate hat trick and second by a UCLA player this season (Sunshine Fontes, 8/25 vs. CSUN). Bruin defender Brianne Riley sent a pass into the box that both Turner and Coll went up for. Turner stayed on her feet and off the bounce sent a left-footed shot past the Beaver defense for her third goal at 19:17. Turner is the second Bruin to record a hat trick this season, joining Fontes, who had three against CSUN on Aug. 25.

UCLA showed no signs of slowing down, increasing the lead to 4-0 at 42:04. After taking a long pass from midfield, MacKenzee Vance put a move on a Beaver defender to get free and laid off a pass to Fontes, who one-timed a shot above the reach of Coll for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.

The Bruins added another in the second half with Cook's fourth goal of the season and second of the weekend. Ally Lemos' free kick found Turner on the right side. Turner headed it down to Cook, who headed it into the left corner of the goal for UCLA's fifth goal of the game at 52:28.

Freshman goalkeeper Neeku Purcell, who entered the game at the start of the second half, preserved UCLA's shutout when she saved a penalty kick in the 77th minute. Purcell finished the game with two saves, while starter Lauren Brzykcy had one. Oregon State's goalkeepers Coll and Mya Sanchez combined for nine saves on 22 UCLA shots.

The Bruins return home to face Arizona State on Oct. 6 at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Tickets are on sale at uclabruins.com/tickets.
