No. 15 UCLA Makes Second Half Comeback to Defeat Gauchos

December 04, 2022 | Women's Basketball

Santa Barbara, Calif. – Behind double-digit scoring from three Bruins, the No. 15 UCLA took down UC Santa Barbara 68-57 on Saturday night. UCLA improves to 8-1 and hands the Gauchos (5-2) their first home loss of the year.

Freshmen Kiki Rice (14 pts, 7-11 FG, 8 reb) and Gabriela Jaquez (12 pts, 5-7 FG, 5 reb) had efficient nights from the field, with Jaquez providing key energy off the bench in The Thunderdome. Charisma Osborne led all scorers for the seventh time this season, pouring in 19 points in Saturday's victory. The senior shot 7-for-9 from the field, sinking three of her five three-point attempts.

UCLA outscored UC Santa Barbara 34-20 inside the paint, and the Bruins outpaced the Gauchos 16-5 on second chance points. Despite a 12.5% shooting performance in the first quarter, UCLA ended the game with a 49.1% FG% (28-57) to outshoot the Gauchos (43.5% FG%, 20-46).

The Bruins got off to their slowest start of the season, scoring just four points on 2-for-16 shooting in the first quarter. Kiki Rice grabbed four rebounds in the quarter, three coming off the offensive glass. The Bruins trailed by a season-high 16 points to end the first period.

The offense kicked into gear in the second quarter behind Osborne, Jaquez and Rice. The trio shot 9-for-9 on the quarter, adding a pair of free throws for all 21 Bruin points in the second. UCLA trailed 25-33 entering halftime.

Redshirt-sophomore Emily Bessoir knocked down a three-pointer with 6:53 to go in the third, marking the Bruins' first lead since it held a 2-0 advantage a minute and a half into the game. Jaquez and Rice made consecutive baskets off an offensive rebound and a steal to put the Bruins up by four going into the media timeout. UCLA and the Gauchos went back and forth until Charisma Osborne hit a three pointer with the clock winding down, putting the Bruins up 48-44 to end the third quarter.

Eight Bruins scored in the final frame, with no single player making more than one basket in the quarter. Gina Conti and Charisma Osborne played all 10 minutes in the fourth, finishing plus-seven in the period. The Gauchos got within two points with 7:51 to go, but UCLA began to pull away after that mark. Gabriela Jaquez and Emily Bessoir knocked down threes on back-to-back possessions to force a UCSB timeout, and the Bruins claimed an eight-point lead. The Bruins led by as many as 12 points after Lina Sontag's second-chance efforts, and UCLA held onto its double-digit lead as the final buzzer rang.
