Men's Tennis Tops UC Santa Barbara, 6-1

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's tennis team defeated UC Santa Barbara, 6-1, in a non-conference match Friday at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Bruins (4-3) picked up the doubles point and never looked back, building a 5-0 lead before the Gauchos (5-3) triumphed in the penultimate completed singles match. Patrick Zahraj clinched the victory, following the efforts of Alexander Hoogmartens and Karl Lee. Hoogmartens, Zahraj and Drew Baird each won twice on the day.
UCLA's top two doubles pairs turned in convincing wins to secure the initial point. First to finish was the Court 1 combination of Zahraj and Bryce Pereira, which made quick work of Kai Brady and Phillip Jordan, 6-1. Pereira and Zahraj's victory represents their second in as many tries this dual-match season. Baird and Hoogmartens were right on the heels of their teammates, polishing off Victor Krustev and Jonathan Zhang by a 6-2 margin on Court 2 to get team scoring underway. Baird and Hoogmartens have won five of their seven matches played dating back to the fall.
Five of six singles first sets went the way of the Bruins, continuing the already-established momentum. Lee won his third straight decision and was first off the singles courts for the second time in as many matches, dispatching of Gianluca Brunkow by a 6-2, 6-2 score on Court 5.
No. 72 Hoogmartens finished moments later with a 6-2, 6-1 result versus Krustev, making the overall tally 3-0. Hoogmartens has now won back-to-back singles contests in straight sets and is 8-4 on the campaign.
Zahraj was able to fend off Brady in the opening set on Court 3, but the second belonged to the Bruin. Zahraj sealed the 6-4, 6-0 victory with an ace, securing his fifth win in a row and removing any suspense regarding the team result. He is 9-2 on the year in singles action.
Baird was able to hold off Jordan on Court 1, 6-3, 6-4, making it 5-0. UCLA's top-court stalwart is now 4-3 in dual matches.
UCSB got on the board when Pablo Masjuan topped Giacomo Revelli on Court 4, 6-2, 6-4. The Bruins would answer with the final win of the day however, as Stefan Leustian outlasted Zhang in a third-set, 10-point tiebreaker for a 6-0, 3-6, 1-0(8) decision. Leustian has a team-high 11 singles wins on the season.
UCLA hits the road next, though the Bruins will stay in Southern California with upcoming nonc-conference dates at Pepperdine (Friday, Feb. 25 – 1 p.m. PT) and USC (Tuesday, March 1 – 3 p.m.) on the schedule.
