LOS ANGELESย --ย No. 3 UCLA (11-0, 2-0) used a dominant third quarter to pull away from No. 8 Fresnoย State (3-7), winning 12-8ย on Saturday morning in the first game of the UCLA Mini Invitationalย at Spieker Aquatics Center.ย The Bruins improved to 5-0 all-time against the Bulldogs.
The Bruins were led by senior Maddie Musselman, who led all scorers with seven points (four goals and three assists. Freshman Emma Linebackย had a hat trick and senior Val Ayala added two goals for UCLA.
Redshirt junior goalkeeper Georgia Phillips got the start in the cage and played the first three quarters, registering eight saves, two assists and one stealย while allowing five goals. Sophomore Sydney Chiang played the fourth quarter and tallied two saves while giving up three goals.
Fanniย Muzsnayย led the Bulldogs with three goals.
PERIOD ONE
> UCLA outscored Fresno State 4-2 in the first period.
> Musselmanย converted a penalty shot to open the scoringย (7:45).
> After FSU tied the score (6:30), Lineback scored her first on a power play to put the Bruins back in front (5:53).
> Another goal by the Bulldogs (4:20) tied the game at 2-2, but the Bruins answered with two power play scores from a pair of seniors.
> Ayala (2:46) and Katrina Drake (0:01) gave the Bruins a 4-2 lead at the end of the first.

PERIOD TWO
> The two teams battled to a 3-3 tieย in the second period.
> Lineback's second goal opened the scoring in the second period (7:24) to put UCLA up 5-2.
> Fresno State scored three straight goals (6:03, 3:37, and 2:40) to tie the game at 5-5.
> Musselman scored her second to put the Bruins back in front (1:36).
> Freshman Molly Renner scored her first goal (0:02) as UCLA pulled its goalkeeper for the 7-on-6 advantage to end the scoring in the first half.
> UCLA led 7-5 at the break.

PERIOD THREE
> The Bruins dominated the third period, 5-0, to put the game away.
> Ayala opened the scoring with her second goal of the game (6:45).
> Musselman then completed her hat trick (6:10) followed by the first goal for senior Ava Johnson (5:08) as UCLA built a 10-5 lead.
> Musselman netted her fourth goal of the gameย (1:35) and Lineback followed her with third (0:25) to end the scoring in the third with UCLA leadingย 12-5 heading into the final frame.
PERIOD FOUR
> The Bulldogs won the fourth quarter 3-0 to provide the 12-8 final score.
> Muzsnay scored all of her goals in the final stanza for FSU (7:14, 3:05, and 2:05).
