Freshmen Star in UCLA’s 2-0 Win Over San Diego State
September 15, 2022 | Women's Soccer
The Bruins dominated the first half, outshooting the Aztecs, 15-2, but it wasn't until the 41st minute that they got on the board. After receiving a pass from Sunshine Fontes, Walbruch dribbled to the left and then fired a shot from beyond the box past Aztec goalkeeper Alexa Madueño.
UCLA took the 1-0 advantage into halftime and doubled the lead in the 53rd minute. After Lexi Wright's header was saved by Madueño, the rebound went to Cook, who headed it in above the reach of Madueño for her second goal of the season.
Another Bruin freshman nearly scored the third goal for the Bruins in the 67th minute, but Bridgette Marin-Valencia's shot hit the crossbar and bounced down but out of the goal. Her shot was one of two by the Bruins that hit the woodwork – one by Cook and another by Reilyn Turner.
"Every single one of our new players has been fantastic," said UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa. "I'm really happy for Ellie because she's one of our hardest workers in training, and the goal she scored was something she's been working on personally with Gof (Boyoko) for the last couple of weeks, so that was great. And ever since our North Carolina weekend, Sof has been one of our top performers, so it was really great to see her get a goal today."

The Bruins finished with a 31-3 advantage in shots. UCLA goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy made the first save of the game in the 19th minute and was not tested again, save for a last-second shot in the final minute. Madueño totaled eight saves for the Aztecs, who dropped to 2-2-4.
UCLA will next face No. 9 Pepperdine on the road on Sunday, Sept. 18. The match will take place in Malibu at 1pm.
