LOS ANGELESย โ€“ Katrina Drake scored three goals and Ava Johnson, Sienna Green, and Anna Pearson each added two goals to lead the No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team past 14th-ranked Indiana in the MPSF and season-opener for both teams at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center on Friday afternoon.

A total of 10 Bruins got into the scoring column with one-third of the goals scored coming from Bruin freshmen. The three Bruins returning as graduate students in the field each scored in the contest, combining for six goals.

The Bruins' fourth player returning for a fifth season, goalkeeper Georgia Phillips, got the start in the cage and registered five saves while allowing two scores. Junior Sydney Chiang came on in relief in the second half and registered six saves and two steals while surrendering four goals.
ย
Friday's season-opener got off to a slow start with UCLA holding a slim 3-2 lead at the end of the first period. Freshman Genoa Rossi earned the distinction of scoring the first goal of the 2023 season when she found the back of the net at the 5:18 mark of the opening quarter off a feed from fellow freshman Taylor Smith. Indiana scored back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead, but UCLA ended the quarter with a goal by freshman Pearson (Hannah Palmer assist) and a score by Johnson to reclaim the lead the Bruins would never relinquish.

The Bruins defense went to work in the second quarter, shutting out the Hoosiers 2-0 to take a 5-2 lead into the break. Green scored her first goal as a Bruin in the second quarter off a pass from Rossi and then Drake scored her first off a feed from freshman Carly McMurray to push the lead to three.
ย
A 10-goal quarter followed that as UCLA erupted for seven scores in the third quarter with IU netting three goals as the Bruins would take a 12-5 lead into the fourth quarter. Indiana would score first to cut the Bruins' lead to 5-3, but Johnson (6:46), Green (5:32), and Drake (3:19) each scored their second goals of the game before graduate Val Ayala (2:36) and sophomore Emma Linebackย (1:50) added their first for the five-goal scoring run. The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the period with Drake completing her hat trick (0:24) and junior Malia Allen (0:01) beating the buzzer on a 7-on-6 opportunity off a feed from Linebackย for her first goal of the game.
ย
Pearson's second goalย of the game opened the scoring (7:11)ย in the fourth quarter. Then senior Hannah Palmer (6:07) found the back of the net and sophomore Molly Renner netted her first score of the year (2:25) to extend the lead to 15-5. Zoe Crouch's second score for the Hoosiers ended the scoring for the game (1:59).
ย
Crouch led Indiana in scoring with the two goals while Hoosierย goalkeeper Mary Askew finished the contest with 11 saves and three steals while giving up 15 goals to the Bruins.

The Bruins return to action tomorrow at the UCSB Winter Invite when they take on #21 San Diego State at 9:30 a.m. PT on Saturday, Jan. 21 at UCSB's Campus Pool.

GAME NOTES: The Bruins won their 24th-consecutive season opener dating back to 1999 โ€ฆ coincidentally, 1999 was the only other time in school history that UCLA has opened a season with a league game (lost 4-3 at Stanford on Feb. 6, 1999)ย โ€ฆ UCLA improved to 19-0 all-time against Indianaย โ€ฆ the Bruins improved to 27-2 all-time in season openers โ€ฆ UCLA is now 24-4 in MPSF openers dating back to 1996.
