UCLA Falls in Straight Sets to Utah
October 01, 2023 | Women's Volleyball
LOS ANGELES – Anna Dodson led the UCLA women's volleyball team with seven blocks and six kills in its 3-0 loss to Utah at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom Sunday afternoon.
Set scores were 17-25, 18-25 and 22-25.
The Bruins (9-5, 1-3 Pac-12) were limited to 28 kills at a .147 hitting percentage. The Utes (7-7, 2-2 Pac-12) totaled 10 service aces in the match, including four and five in sets one and two, respectively. UCLA had five reception errors in the match.
Dodson kept the Bruins' chances alive in set three with a team-high four kills on nine swings. A clutch kill by Desiree Becker closed the Utes' lead to three points, 23-20. Utah middle blocker Amelia Van Der Werff put match point on the service line with her 13th kill of the match on the next play. A kill by outside hitter Cheridyn Leverette and a Utes setting error forced a Utah timeout, 24-22. However, UCLA's hopes for a fourth were dashed on Kamry Bailey's 11th kill of the night.
In set one, Mokihana Tufono entered in as a serving substitution and quickly erased a 4-1 Utah lead with an ace and three more tough serves that led to a kill for Iman Ndiaye and three Ute attacking errors. Despite the early lead, Utah answered with four aces of their own to propel themselves to a 23-14 lead by the final plays of set one.
Utes' setter Viktoria Wahlgren opened set two with a 7-0 run at the service line, collecting four of her six aces. The Bruins tightened the gap late in the set on a block and kill by Dodson and ace from Leverette, 24-18.
UCLA will be on the road the next two Pac-12 series with its first trip to face Arizona and Arizona State next week. The Bruins square off with the Wildcats on Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. (PT) on the Pac-12 Networks.
