LOS ANGELES โ No.2 UCLA kicked off an important slate of weekend games with a 2-0 victory over visiting California to set up a battle for the Pac-12 title on Sunday against second-place Stanford.
ย
Junior defender Ayo Oke scored the game-winner in the 24th minute against her former team. Oke made a long and skillful drive through the middle of the field, spun around a defender and launched a 30-yard shot to the right corner for her first goal as a Bruin. ย ย
ย
Senior midfielder Michaela Rosenbaum, who was making her first start of the season, added a second goal eight minutes later with a driven ball from outside the 16 into the lower left corner. Oke set up the goal with a pass to Taylor Cheatham, who drew two defenders, allowing for Rosenbaum to have the time and space to place the ball past California goalkeeper Teagan Wy.
ย
"Ayo was playing with another level today because this was her old team, and she wanted to make a statement," said UCLA head coach Margueritte Aozasa. "She definitely did that, so that was really great from her. It was a great individual goal. Mickey, we're really proud of her because we needed her to step up today, not just with a goal but also with 90 minutes, and she did that very well. Both very well-deserved."
ย
The Bruins (15-1-0, 9-0-0 in the Pac-12) were relentless in the first half of play, totaling seven shots on goal to zero by California (7-4-6, 4-1-4). Wy had five saves in the first 23 minutes, including a diving shot on a Reilyn Turner shot in the 16th minute and a 1v1 save on a shot in the box by Ally Cook in the 21st minute. Turner was denied on what looked to be a sure bicycle kick goal in the 17th minute, with her former UCLA teammate and Cal graduate defender Kylie Kerr clearing the ball off the goal line.
ย
UCLA was lightly challenged in the second half, with goalkeeper Neeku Purcell only needing to make one save, coming in the 58th minute, on five Cal shots. Purcell picked up her seventh solo shutout of the season as the Bruins handed the Golden Bears their first conference loss. ย
ย
The Bruins, who have won 12 consecutive games and are unbeaten in their last 21 home games, will next play No. 4 Stanford on Sunday, Oct. 29 at Noon. UCLA needs either a win or a tie against the Cardinal to secure its 14th Pac-12 title. ย
