LOS ANGELES – No. 13 seed UCLA men's soccer fell to Loyola Marymount 1-0 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday evening at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. LMU scored the lone goal of the contest in the 30th minute.
The Bruins tallied a total of 24 chances in the game, with seven coming on target on Sunday night. Those 24 shots were a season-high for UCLA.
Sam Joseph in goal for the Bruins made four stops on the night, while Andre Ochoa led the offensive attack for the Bruins with five shots and two coming on goal.
UCLA had multiple chances early on that were thwarted by the LMU defense. In the 10th minute Tucker Lepley picked up the ball in some space just outside the 18-yard box and took a shot, but his effort was sent wide of the post via a deflection and the game remained scoreless.
LMU then went ahead in the 30th minute courtesy of Tyger Smalls. Off a ball that was lofted over the top of the UCLA defense Smalls picked up the ball and then slotted it into the bottom left corner of the net to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. A minute later the Bruins had a couple great chances of their own but Andre Ochoa's shots were blocked twice and the Bruins went into the halftime break down 1-0.
In the second half the Bruins kicked things up a gear. UCLA tallied 13 of their 24 shots in the second half of play.
With the Bruins still trailing the two sides headed into the final 10 minutes, where the Bruins had a few great chances. Tommy Silva hit a ball from just outside the 18-yard box which the keeper saved but the ball bounced straight to Ryan Becher, but his shot was saved by the LMU keeper to keep the Bruins off the board.
On the very next possession UCLA earned a corner. Off the ensuing corner Cam Wilkerson smashed the ball from just outside the box towards goal. Becher again got a foot on it and directed it at goal, but this time the ball hit off the crossbar and the Bruins couldn't find the back of the net and fell 1-0 on Sunday evening.
UCLA finished the season as the Pac-12 Champions for the first time since 2014, and the ninth time overall. The Bruins will enter the Big Ten Conference in 2024.
