LOS ANGELES --ย No. 1 UCLA (22-0, 5-0 MPSF West) completed a five-game homestand to end the home slate of the 2023 season with a 13-8 win on "Senior Night" over No. 6 UC Irvine (14-8, 3-1 Big West) on Friday nightย at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center.ย UCLA improved to 82-60-1ย all-time in the series history against the Anteaters. The Bruins also ran their winning streak to 22, which is the fourth-longest in school history.

UCLA, which was shorthanded tonight playing without its leading scorer, Rafael Real Vergara (at 2023 Pan American Games in Chile playing on the National Team of Brazil), had 10 players score in the contest, led by two goals each from senior Makoto Kenney, redshirt freshman Frederico Jucá Carsalade and freshman Ben Liechty. Senior Jack Larsen and sophomore Noah Rowe (each with one goal and two assists) tied for the team lead in scoring with three points (joining Jucá Carsalade and Ben Liechtyย who also had three points (one assist to go with their two scores).

Senior Garret Griggsย got the start in the cage and played the first three quarters,ย tallying nine saves and two steals while allowing three goals. Senior Bernardo Maurizi made his second appearance of the year and played the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, giving up two goals while being credited with two saves. Senior Chase Honaker played the final three minutes of the contests, recording one stop while surrendering three scores.

UCLA led 2-0 at the end of the first period. Ben Liechty put the Bruins on the board first (5:29) on a cross-cage skip shot off a feed from Jack Larsen. Rowe made it 2-0 with a power play score (4:01) to end the scoring in the first.

The two teams battled to a 2-2 draw in the second quarterย with UCLA taking aย 4-2ย lead into the break. Sophomore Gray Carson scored on a counter (6:08) to open the scoring in the second period to put UCLA up 3-0. Then Carson picked up an assist on a score by senior Giorgio Alessandria (5:16) to extend the lead to 4-0. After a score from two meters by UCI, the Anteaters cut the deficit in half to 4-2 with a score at the buzzer off a corner throw.

The Bruins would dominate the third period, 6-1, to take control of the game, heading into the final period with a 10-3 lead. The Anteaters scored first to pull to within one (6:49) with a power play goal to make it 4-3 Bruins. But UCLA reeled off six straight to end the period.
