Hot Start Lifts UCLA Past UC Riverside

November 09, 2023 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – All five starters scored in double figures as the No. 4 UCLA Women's Basketball team trounced UC Riverside on Thursday night, 90-52. The Bruins begin the season 2-0, claiming victory inside Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.

Graduate student Charisma Osborne tallied 13 points, she also brought down 11 rebounds to record the 17th double-double of her career.

Sophomore Lauren Betts also recorded a double-double on Thursday evening. The Centennial, Colorado native had 14 points and tallied 15 rebounds in the 38-point win.

All five starters for the Bruins were in double figures for the second-consecutive game to begin the season. Sophomores Gabriela Jaquez and Kiki Rice led the way with 18 points each; Jaquez tallied a new career-high in the win. Sophomore Londynn Jones had 15 points, while Betts and Osborne recorded 14 points and 13 points respectively.

With the Bruins on an 18-0 run to begin the game, the ball found its way to Osborne. The Moreno Valley, California native stole the ball off a Highlander's defensive rebound and then put it back up and made some history in the process.

The Bruins started the game on a 20-0 run and did not allow the Highlanders any time to get in rhythm. UC Riverside made its first basket with 57 seconds left in the first quarter. The Bruins held the Highlanders 0-15 from the field to begin the game and took a 25-2 lead to end the first. Offensively for UCLA seven different Bruins scored in the opening quarter, led by Osborne's eight points off of 3-6 shooting from the field.

UCLA continued to control the tempo in the second quarter. The Bruins went 8-12 from the field in the quarter led by Jones' seven points. For the half Jones and Osborne led UCLA in the scoring column with 10 points apiece, while Lauren Betts also chipped in with eight points and 10 rebounds as the Bruins took a 49-20 lead at the break.

Jaquez got the Bruins on the board to start the second half with a layup after grabbing an offensive rebound. Kiki Rice then drilled her first three-pointer of the game a few possessions later as the Bruins extended their lead to 54-22 with 8:14 left in the third quarter. On that Rice triple Osborne earned her 17th career double-double when she grabbed an offensive rebound and kicked the ball out to Rice for the triple.

On the next possession for the Bruins, Betts continued to dominate down low and recorded the second double-double of her career (first as a Bruin). The sophomore picked up an offensive rebound before laying the ball in for the score.

UCLA would then take a 62-36 lead into the final quarter of play. The Bruins then scored their most points of any quarter on the night when they shot 79% (11-14) from the field, and scored 28 points in the quarter. Jaquez led the way in the period with 11 points off of 4-5 shooting from the field and two threes as the Bruns won 90-52.
