LOS ANGELES – UCLA Track and Field saw two athletes in competition at the Washington State Open and the University of New Mexico Collegiate Classic over the weekend. Sophomore Sydney Johnson and redshirt-sophomore Yanla Ndjip-Nyemeck set personal bests in their respective events.

Johnson placed second in a field of 25 competitors in the Spokane, Wash., meet. The sophomore scored a personal-best 3,844 points in the pentathlon. Johnson shined in the 60m hurdle (2nd, 8.72) and the long jump (2nd, 19-02.00). The Bruin now ranks seventh all-time among UCLA indoor pentathletes.

Ndjip-Nyemeck ran a 8.18 in the 60m hurdles to qualify for the finals at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic, finishing in the top eight runners in the preliminary round. The Bruin improved her time in the finals, running an 8.10 for fourth place in the event. Ndjip-Nyemeck's 8.10 places her tied-third all time in indoor competition for UCLA.

COACH'S CORNER

"Sydney performed very well this weekend," said Director of Track and Field Avery Anderson. "Two of her five events were personal bests, and the others were right at personal best levels. This was the best overall multi event competition she's put together, and it's great to see the consistency start to come together for someone so early in her multi career."

Coach Anderson said Ndjip-Nyemeck performed well in both prelims and finals of the women's 60m hurdles event. "It was a great opportunity for Yanla to line up against other highly nationally ranked hurdlers," said Anderson. "Iron sharpens iron and Yanla got better this weekend."
