Women Qualify Nine for NCAA Outdoor National Championships in June
May 27, 2023 | Track & Field
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Nine Bruins will advance to the 2023 NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Track & Field National Championships after qualifying from this weekend's West Prelims hosted by Sacramento State.
They'll join the eight Bruin men who qualified this weekend on a trip to Austin, Texas, in June for the outdoor season finale.
Advancing from Saturday
Lyvante Su'emai came up clutch in the third heat of the women's discus First Round, throwing a mark of 54.63m (179-2) during her attempts. Only 12 of the 48 competitors in the field qualified out; Su'emai's mark ranked in the top eight on the day.
Emma Tavella fired off a 15-second personal best in the 3000m steeplechase to earn a time qualifier in the event. Tavella already held the top spot on UCLA' all-time top 10 list in the race, but her 9:52.68 from Saturday's quarterfinals was the first time a Bruin has broken 10-minute mark.
Rose Pittman was the third Bruin to PR and third Bruin runner to qualify out of her event. The junior recorded a 2:04.31 in the 800m, the third-fastest time run by a UCLA student-athlete. Pittman's mark secured her a spot in the National Championships in June.
The 4x400m relay team of Aly Conyers, Makenzy Pierre-Webster, Kate Jendrezak and Naomi Johnson combined for a 3:32.09 in the quarterfinals of the event. That mark was good for second in their heat, automatically qualifying the relay team for the semifinals in June.
Men's Qualifiers
The 4x100m team of Myles Misener-Daley, Antonie Nortje, Kaden Reynolds and Willington Wright qualified with their 39.39 mark in the race.
Peter Herold was the next Bruin to qualify, running a personal-best 8:35.19 in the 3000m Steeplechase. With the new mark, Herold jumps up one spot to fourth on UCLA's Outdoor Top 10 List.
Misener-Daley punched his ticket to Austin in the 400m race, running a 45.63 in his heat to qualify for nationals.
Through two heats, Jalyn Jackson's mark of 15.68m held the top spot at the West Prelims men's triple jump. His jump held to finish in the top 12 at the conclusion of the event, sending the jumper to Texas.
Wright joined Misener-Daley as a multiple-event qualifier; the two paired up with Antonie Nortje and Cameron Reynolds in the 4x400m relay to earn a spot at the national championships. The squad cruised to a second-place finish, running a 3:03.68 to automatically qualify from their heat.
