No. 2 UCLA Overwhelms Occidental, 18-9

LOS ANGELESย --ย No. 2 UCLA (10-0) opened the 2023 Overnght MPSF Invitational with an 18-9 win over Occidental (3-3) on Friday afternoon at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 13-0 all-time in the series history with Occidental.Though the Bruins restedย their starters, UCLA still had a season-high 13 different Bruins scoreย in the contest, including a third hat trick of the season for redshirt sophomore center Grant Loth. Redshirt sophomore attackers Anthony Gross and Mark Laurlund as well as freshman Wade Sherlock each scored twice. Laurlundย (two goals, two assists), and redshirt sophomores Trey Doten (one goal, three assists) and Griffin Engstrom (four assists), all tied for the team lead in scoring with four points.
Senior Chase Honaker got the start in the cage and went the distance, tallying five saves to go with three steals and one assist while surrendering nine goals.
The two teams battled to a 4-4 start in the first period. The Bruins received one goal each from Loth, sophomore Gray Carson, and redshirt freshmen Ben Larsen and Frederico Jucá Carsalade.
The Bruins won the second quarter, 4-3, to take an 8-7 lead into the break. The quarter was highlighted by the first career goal for redshirt freshman Jack Hilinski, who was playing in his first game as a Bruin. Redshirt junior Luke Makshanoff, Laurlund, and redshirt freshman Vinnie Merk each scored a goal in the second to give the Bruins the halftime lead.
UCLA dominated the third period, 7-0, to take a 15-7 lead into the final stanza. Loth scored twice in the third period to complete his hat trick. UCLA also received one goal each from Laurlund, Doten, Gross, redshirt sophomore Eli Liechty, and senior Hayden Nightingale.
The Bruins won the fourth period, 3-2, to provide the 18-9 final. Sherlock scored both of his goals in the fourth (7:28 and 6:42) before Gross netted his second on a power play with 1:13 remaining.
UP NEXT: The Bruins will head to USC to face No. 4 Pepperdine in the quarterfinals of the Overnght MPSF Invitational at 11 a.m. PT on Saturday, Sept. 23 at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. Admission is free.
