MVB Sweeps No. 20 Tritons

The No. 2 UCLA men's volleyball team (6-2) swept past No. 20 UC San Diego (2-6) on Friday night in La Jolla. Scores of the non-league match were 25-18, 27-25, 25-17.
Ethan Champlin led the way with a match-high 17 kills while hitting .519. Andrew Rowan set the team to a .432 percentage while adding three aces and six digs. It marked UCLA's third match this season hitting above the .400 mark. Merrick McHenry registered five blocks and five kills. Guy Genis hit .778 with seven kills and two block assists.
UCLA surged to a 5-2 lead to start set one. The Bruins led 7-3 after a Rowan kill, but UCSD battled back to level the score at 10-all. A couple of Triton errors pushed UCLA in front 12-10. Kills by Ido David and Champlin made it 17-14. McHenry's swing resulted in a 19-15 edge. Alex Knight's spike put UCLA ahead 23-18. David followed with another kill and Genis teamed up with Knight for a block to end set one at 25-18.
The Tritons grabbed the early lead in set two and moved out to a 7-14 advantage. Champlin's kill pulled the Bruins to within 10-14. Genis' swing made it 13-17. A Triton error and a Champlin swing sliced the margin to 15-17. A UCSD service error and a Champlin kill made it 19-20. A Triton error evened the score at 20-all. McHenry and David tallied back-to-back spikes for a 22-20 lead. UCSD came back to level the score at 24-all. McHenry put UCLA up 25-24 with a kill. UCSD answered with a kill but then had a service error. A block by Cooper Robinson and Genis ended the frame at 27-25.
UCLA used an ace by David to take a 5-3 lead in set three. Consecutive kills by Genis and Robinson were followed by a UCSD error to put UCLA up 13-10. A couple of aces from Rowan handed UCLA leads of 17-14 and then 21-14. Back-to-back spikes by Champlin and Genis pushed the Bruins to set point at 24-16. A service error ended the set at 25-17.
The Bruins will return to action next Wednesday night at No. 7 UC Irvine (4-1). UCLA will then host the Anteaters on Friday at 7 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
