Men's Tennis Beats Ole Miss 4-2 in Boston
January 28, 2024 | Men's Tennis
BOSTON โ Emon van Loben Sels posted his first career dual-match singles victory in clinching fashion Sunday as the UCLA men's tennis team outlasted Ole Miss 4-2 at Murr Center. The consolation contest was held as part of ITA Kickoff Weekend's Harvard regional.
Spencer Johnson registered his second two-win day of the weekend for the Bruins (1-2), also teaming with van Loben Sels to prevail in doubles play. UCLA rebounded from dropping the doubles point, with Alexander Hoogmartens and Jorge Plans Gonzalez also proving triumphant on the singles courts. John Hallquist Lithén picked up a singles victory for the Rebels (4-2).
One day after clinching the initial point, Johnson and van Loben Sels were first off the doubles courts. The pair broke serves of Brice Patoux and Walker Stearns at 1-1 and 4-2 en route to its 6-2 win. The pairing of Johnson and van Loben Sels is 6-1 dating back to fall tournament play. Ole Miss answered on Court 1, where Lukas Engelhardt and Nikola Slavic broke Timothy Li and Giacomo Revelli for 5-5 and went on to take the final two games, as well. That left the decision to be made by way of tiebreaker on Court 3. Trailing 3-6, Bruins Hoogmartens and Govind Nanda nabbed back-to-back points, but Lithén and Carson Baker were able to close it out.
Johnson improved to 11-4 dating back to the start of fall tournament action, besting Englehardt 6-4, 6-1 on Court 4. Each team claimed three first sets. There was a wait of approximately 30 minutes until the next completed contest, as all of the remaining courts reached third sets.
On his birthday, Jorge Plans Gonzalez gave UCLA its first lead of the day. His comeback against Patoux on Court 5 was made final at 1-6, 6-0, 6-4. The dual-match singles win marked Plans Gonzalez's first as a Bruin. Notching his initial win of the season was Hoogmartens, whose 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 result opposite Isac Strömberg on Court 3 put his team on the verge of victory.
Hallquist Lithén momentarily shifted momentum back to the side of Ole Miss, beating Revelli 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 on Court 2 with the first and last courts still up for debate.
With the top-court showdown knotted at three games apiece in its third set, van Loben Sels took charge on Court 6. He collected the final three games to complete his comeback, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 versus Baker.
On its way back to Los Angeles, UCLA stops in Stillwater, Okla. to face Oklahoma State Tuesday. First serve from Greenwood Tennis Center is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT.
